Are you referring to the law against "foreign law"? Or the trade union banning sale of cars by makers? Or forbidding Abortions using Obama care money?

Or the law against using science to evaluate the price of coastal party, or the extreme gerry-mandering, or... Everyday, it seems to be some new kind of stupid.

But yeah, today is the whole "We're banning Tesla from selling cars in our state, because their cars are better than our dealer's cars, and that's unfair competition."

The GOP has their first total control of the state since 1870, so they're trying to fit as much stupid as possible into two years. North Carolina is not stupid, the Republican Party is what is stupid.

The Tesla thing is not at all unique to North Carolina, automobile lobbyists have tried it in four or five other states (and failed upon judicial review).

Honestly if there is one thing that sort of confuses and bugs me at the same time, it is when someone says that something has "too much continuity"

I've seen this in movies of tv shows where the reviewer basically goes "Well how else is someone who didn't watch the show going to understand what is going on? This is terrible" and I keep on thinking "Maybe that is because it is a movie for people who watch the show and not everything needs to cater to everyone"

>_<

My brain just has 100 WTFs running all day.

The the idea is that you should be able to enter a series at any point and still be more entertained than confused. This was designed by producers who basically wanted mass appeal. Anybody can just sit down and enjoy it without having to do their research, thus middle of the season episodes don't turn away potential viewers.
If producers say something is the correct way to do things for long enough, critics, whos job it is to try and say how correctly something was done, start to believe them. Writers and fans be damned!

Seriously, WTF is wrong with North Carolina? Have they all contracted a terminal case of crazy-stupid there?
If by "all" you mean, "the party in control of the Governor's House and state legislature", then yes.

Pretty much what MSH said. The GOP hasn't had this kind of stranglehold on power in a century or more, so they're like a kid in a candy shop. A really greedy kid with ADHD and diabetes. The part where you could argue that the state in general is coming down with the terminal stupid is that this started in 2010 with the "Tea Party Revolution", when a bunch of these fuckers campaigned as fiscal conservatives and swore up and down they had no social conservative agenda...and then once they got in promptly began ramrodding a social conservative agenda.

So it's actually going on 3 years (and two election cycles) now. I was dismayed that they held on to power through the 2012 elections, in part due to some rather brazen gerrymandering at the state district level. If they still keep their death grip on the legislature after 2014....I dunno, man. Might be time to look for the lifeboats.  :-\

Yes, the Democrats chose a bad time to lose various states to the repubs. this'll bite them in the ass at least until the middle decade, in which natural population diffusion will curtail the effectiveness.

I don't think they'll maintain control. All of these far-right edicts are making people hate the NC GOP. Their attempt to completely screw over and disenfranchise college students will cause a particular backlash, because everyone knows about that one.

Yes, but...

It's easy to think that when you live in Raleigh or Durham or even Greensboro or Boone. Because those places are cities. With liberals. When I took my mini-vacation last week down to Seagrove, it reminded me of just how much of the state is still rural, undereducated, poor and Bible-thumping.

Who cares about them danged libruhl college students anyways?? Certainly not people whose children were never going to be headed to college in the first place. I mean, it's easy to take it for granted that everyone expects their kids to go to college or at least try to go to college. There's still significant swaths of the countryside where the expectation is that Chrystal will go to beauty school or get hitched and pregnant (not necessarily in that order), and that Jimmy Lee will go work at the auto shop with his dad, or at the factory, or on the farm, or join the Army.

Not knocking those folks, but it does create a disconnect with urban dwellers, and it's what allows these sort of batshit-crazy pols to stay in office. They just pitch it as "See, we're taking back YOUR tax dollars and spending it on stuff YOU want! Like banning gay marriage!"  :-\

Too many are going to college.  Its inflating costs, stifling our workforce, accruing debt, and further supporting our cultural idea that college is necessary.  It is for certain professions, but many would far equally well with apprenticeships, technical high schools/trade schools, and otj training.  Of course the whole educational system is wonkered.

Not trying to stifle education, mind you.  Only believe many would individually fare better if they rethought their goals.

At least at App, there are a lot of rural conservative kids. The whole "education for a better life" thing is popular these days, regardless of how true it is. Watching them go through an existential crisis when they hit a place like App has been hilarious (generally, there are two reactions: either getting lost in a haze of drugs or becoming extremist and joining the still very much underground Campus Republicans).

Anyway, I don't deny the strong conservative base in NC, but the fact is that we haven't stayed Democrat for so long after the affiliation switch without a reason. This is very much a battleground state, and the GOP is doing things that will alienate the swing vote, which is suicidal in such a climate.

People who go to college are better off in almost all areas for the rest of their lives. The problem isn't going to college. Everyone going to college is very much a good thing. The problem stems from us trying to maintain a system geared towards only some people going to college. We should instead take the model that everyone is guaranteed secondary education if they want it.
