Part of my fingernail of right middle finger appears to be infected. Area directly between nail and skin, and extending a little around it. Darker color, shiny, warm, hurts and is a little swollen. I got a real shock when I pressed on it during school, and a small globule of goo of some sort squirted out from the crack between my nail and my skin.

That's oddly specific. I feel like a dwarf.

That is otherwise known as an ingrown nail. The swelling will lead to more growing-in, which will lead to more swelling. If you have bad luck, you'll need your nail root shortened via surgery, and if you wait too long, the painkillers won't work anymore because of infection. Talking from horrible, horrible personal experiences here.

i had the same issue with a toe, i went it in and cut my nail, then proceeded to pull out a 1/4in shard out of the wound. That hurt soooo goddamn bad but so relieved after it got out.

I've had these before. Pull the skin back and try to squeeze out as much pus as you can. If you have to cut into it with nail clippers or something, it may hurt, but it's generally softer and easier to deal with than the healthier portions of flesh. Next, you want to cut off the part of the nail that is ingrown. Nail clippers are good for this if it doesn't just fall apart anyways. Now, just disinfect it. Pull the skin back and use the peroxide/alcohol/iodine/whatever so that it gets inside.

It helps if you don't wait for the horrible-amounts-of-pus stage. If you see swelling, try to pull the nail out of where it's growing into and trim it back.

I had in-grown toenails for yeeeears before they finally took out the root. Even with 2-3 needles that hurt like a BITCH, and the other ones where they just clipped the nail out took two and still hurt.

I think I've had it done 4-5 times.

I have a narrower toenail but it's basically normal lookin'. The part of the root they took out was the part that was growing starting under the skin.

Same here, but the whole nail grew out anyways. :/
