It's kind of a weird tradition, to own a gun just incase the government fucks up to bad.
Back from when the army was just a bunch of dudes with guns.

Yep just incase Britain ever comes back and becomes the government.

What are you talking about? I've still got my musket and powder horn hanging over the fireplace in case those lobster bastards ever come back for a third go at us. People like me are the only defense this country has, dontcha know?

Back from when the army was just a bunch of dudes with guns.
You have to remember that when the country was set up, there were very few republics that had succeeded on a large scale without going bad. The Roman republic grew into an oppressive empire, they had just fought a war against Britain, which is where their tradition of representative government came from, because they felt stepped on, and most of the handful of other attempts at republicanism had devolved into anarchy or resulted in prosperous nations that fell to the first conqueror to come sniffing around. Giving individuals a check against the government, and a defense against foreign foes that didn't depend on a corruptible beauracracy, made excellent sense at the time, particularly since there was still an omnipresent war, on a small scale, with the Indian tribes to the west of the new nation, particularly when Britain wanted to give them a distraction.

In a very real sense, both concerns were vindicated by history. Just not in the US. Scores of idealistic revolutionary governments have gone bad, and had to be overthrown by the very people that put them in power, and the actions of United States Forces In Phillippenes, the French and Polish (I'm including the partisans from the western parts of the Soviet states in this as well) resistances, and the People's Liberation Army during WWII prove the amount of damage that can be done by a mostly-civilian force with light weapons to an invader. The Polish and other Eastern European partisans have been credited by some historians as winning the war on the Eastern front. Not sure I'd go that far, but the fact that it's even a plausible argument speaks volumes.

WTFoftheday:
While browsing Wikipedia today I somehow went from reading Tool's wiki page to reading about Maynard James Keenan to reading about recluses to reading about avoidant personality disorder.

A quick shift of topics, sure, but what's even odder is that many of the symptoms fit me. Maybe I'm just too quick to diagnose myself, but whatever.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You could easily just say "it's just low self-esteem, derp" but it's non-the-less interesting to read about a so called recognized psychological issue that fits someone almost exactly. Psychology is interesting.

It's also funny how I went from reading about a heavy metal band to self-diagnosing myself based on a Wikipedia article, and in less than ten clicks to boot.

It is best to ignore any "hey, that sounds like me" thoughts that arise when reading about psychological disorders. You'll end up thinking you have every mental illness under the sun if you indulge such thought. Mental illnesses are, for the most part, completely normal behaviors and feelings taken to a pathological extreme. If you don't see some of yourself in the symptom lists you probably have much more reason to be concerned.

So, what MSH is saying, is that angst simulates every mental illness ever.

I've got most of those as a regular part of life, and the rest as occasional fun surprises. As MSH said, however, things like that being familiar does not a mental disorder make.

Sounds more like a case of being an introvert with some self-confidence issues.

Like MSH said, don't worry unless your symptoms are extreme.

So if anyone remembers the fellow on /tg/ who rolled out a full fight between a pair of platemail-clad knights under FATAL rules a while ago, he's back, this time doing an unarmored fight with polearms. Not posting a link because FATAL, 4chan, etc., but it isn't hard to find if you're on tonight.

I just spent the last two-and-a-half hours having fun by suggesting and listening to my roommate do spontaneous electric guitar renditions of video game themes. What the fuck is happening to me.

I can also now confirm that if you play the Sonic drowning theme on an electric guitar, it is still terrifying. According to my roommate, it is even more terrifying high.

Is this the same roommate who warranted semi-daily posts in the RAAAGE thread? The one that you hated and couldn't wait to get away from?

That actually sounds like a lot of fun.

Yes, the same. I think this is one of the heralds of the end times.
