Only if you're using faulty logic.
What is faith but faulty logic?

Something entirely different. Faith is holding a belief despite evidence to the contrary. Faulty logic comes in myriad forms but doesn't usually fit that definition.

Would call faith more belief without (sufficient) justification, than belief despite evidence to the contrary. There's a degree of virtue in the former. Not so much the latter. Still something entirely outside the realm of logic, though.

Virtue doesn't factor into it. Faith is, and has always been, an intentional ignorance of evidence as to fit a narrative. You need no more than simple observation to see that.

Why do people deny evolution despite all modern biology being reliant upon and evidence of it? Because it violates their religious narrative, so it needs to not be true.

Why do people believe that prayer can fix their actual, physical problems? The narrative says so. Therefore it is true no matter how many times it fails.

Why do people believe in gods they've never seen? The narrative says they're there. If their senses don't then their senses must be wrong.

Yeah, yeah, religion is a bunch of crap.
Well, this specific discussion is more about what faith is exactly and that it is a bunch of crap, but yes.

This is a discussion forum with a highly left-wing userbase. If you can't handle occasionally hearing anti-religious sentiment you may be in the wrong place.

Yes but I am more upset about how this derailed this thread.
Or, atleast hijacked a part of it. No one else is posting anything so I assume they are all asleep or at work or whatever.

I'm with Devling on this one.
Sometimes this forum just devolves into a gaggle of scientific types pointing and laughing at the parts of the internet filled with "morons" who believe in some form of god.
It is tiresome. ::) I'm not particularly religious, but still. All the religion-bashing gets really old after a while, y'know?

As for a WTF, I am just ridiculously lethargic and drowsy today. I'm kinda confused as to why. :-\

Aren't we? You've talked on here a lot about how you're trying to keep religious peers from indoctrinating your son. How am I any different?

I personally am not hostile toward religion; just those who knowingly hold mutually exclusive beliefs and rationalize it away (which "faith" often is used for). Beliefs that don't violate empiricism are a-okay to me.

You're very blunt and zealous about it.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Eh. Annoying part to me is shoehorning faith into a purely religious thing. It's not. Category of belief is category of belief, and belief without sufficient justification extends to hypothesis as much as the afterlife. The only difference between the two is the means of justification and means of communicating the experimental results (and that's more methodology than category), but they're still fairly fundamentally the same sort of belief. It gets squigglier when you get into unjustifiable belief instead of just not-yet justified belief, but it's still roughly the same sort of thing. And something for a different thread, so, whatever.

WTF for one AM was that Opera's spellcheck actually accepted squigglier. It doesn't even accept spellcheck!

I take issue with a lot of specific beliefs and practices.  Indoctrinating children into a highly speculative belief system before they're capable of critical thought is one of them.  I stop waaaaay short of blanket condemnations, though, such as deriding the very concept of faith, on... *sigh*... I really don't want to get into this with you, as I've clashed with you before on the subject and it's trying... but on the basis of cherry-picked applications of the word, when it can also simply mean trust or conviction, which can be virtuous qualities depending on the circumstances.
