It's too bad that Incursion's development has slowed down so much. The maker had a great plan for a bigger game (on the lines of ADOM but Incursion-style and more random). But it seems to be really really stuck.

Aye, aye. Last word I've heard was there might be something public either this year or next. Given that Inc's been in some form of development longer than DF has and still seems to be chugging along... well, I'm hopeful it'll pick back up at some point. Mensch has had pretty long gaps between anything playerside happening before, yeah, but seems pretty dedicated for all that other responsibilities get in the way. Got my eye on the google groups, in any case.

E: In the mean time, though, I'ma be turning this burgeoning puddingswarm into a ranged doomnuke with /call companions/. I do so love how ridiculous summoning and related shenanigans gets in Incursion. Such a tremendous difference from most other games that let you dabble in conjuration.

E2: It has got to embarrassing for greater demons to be dogpiled and murdered by =< CR1 critters, though. Can you imagine how much it must suck for a physical manifestation of raw evil to get itself jacked by a rolling ball of cave pelicans or somethin'?

Microsoft is not an MMORPG. It is not WoW. Moreover, it doesn't really have the same types of intellectual property problems other software developers do with endusers.

I want to OWN something in terms of software. I'm sick of licenses. I'm sick of companies sticking their hands into my pockets every month for everything. It's getting ridiculous. Especially in this economy, they think everybody can afford to deal with this level of BS expense/hassle?

Go ahead, Microsoft, keep on losing market share to Apple. I was always one of those people who would NEVER buy apple products for upwards of 15 years. I thought people who did were crazy, but over the years, they seem to have more and more of  a point.

It all really comes down to this:

You have enough Microsoft. What you had wasn't broke so quit trying to fix it. Your cures are worse than the disease.
And, no, trying to fix your crap with what you mistakenly believe is clever marketing doesn't work. The idea that "If people saw Vista firsthand they'd like it," Ignored people's natural ability to smell crap.

Now you're basically trying to turn my computer into nothing but an end user terminal with a connection to my credit card and I don't even have on site access to my own files or software? The travesty is, due to the popularity of the term "cloud computing" people might buy into this junk. I won't, but they might.

Yes, but the problem there is compatibility.

Don't think Microsoft likes Open Office. Microsoft has always been about being the default for everything, everywhere for everyone. And with several updates to Microsoft Office per year, are things going to be compatible? Who knows? Most people and businesses use Windows and Microsoft Office. You have to be able to interchange and open various files from various places. That's the problem, or rather one of several.

I've been doing that for a few years now. It has a few issues, but it's not as bad as trying to convert from Mac to Windows, as some students do.

Apple isn't any better.  They may have been at one point, but then they said "You know what?  If we can't beat them by being better than them, let's beat them by being WORSE."

And if you can't afford the BS Microsoft is pulling, and I do agree that they've always indulged their fair share of BS, you can at least rely on their stance on piracy.  They could be much, much stricter on the issue, but they've stated that they would rather people pirate their stuff than turn to the competition.

Libre Office it's called nowadays, iirc (and there's the ninja). And True, it works with just about anything. It'll load .doc, save .doc, whatever. Seems to have some trouble saving .docx, but meh, you generally still want to be using .doc anyway due to backwards compatibility and crap. Part of the problem with trying to break compatibility via updating, as you're suggesting M$ would (do) do is that that screws over older software their own users use and cause all sorts of problems, so they generally don't (can't, really) do anything extreme enough to genuinely cause problems.

Basically, give it a try, work with it a bit if you can spare the time. I've had pretty good luck with it so far, and dropping the arseload cash burden that comes with keeping up with office for something free (and likely more compatible with non-office formats, to boot.) is, well. Kinda' speaks for itself.

E: And frankly, the more people convert to a FOSS source for fundamental software like text editing suites and suchlike, the better it's going to be for everyone. So, like. Spread the word et al. Awareness is generally all that's really stopping stuff like the near-monopoly M$ Office has from being broken.
