Owning a gun doesn't null reasoning.
It rather disastrously allows people to substitute reasoning for "I have a gun." If people do not conform to your wills, you can always use force instead of compassion or understanding. This is especially forceful in promoting a power gap between an armed police force and a disarmed populace, or promoting anxiety in an armed society.
Not owning a gun doesn't promote peaceful negotiations.
There was once a man on a nice Ol' BBC documentary about crime in Britain. He had a knife and had flipped out. Police arrived, but were reluctant to approach for fear that the dogs they brought might get hurt. They spent the next 25 minutes talking, he surrendered without fight, no one was injured and he was sent to court and given counselling. It is rather nice when both parties are incapable of killing each other when they are overcome with fear or anger.
Everyone may not think so, but for me having a gun is assurance, peace of mind.  That's why I bought one for my mother.
Peace of mind for me comes from knowing I won't be needing a gun.
The "Fuck the Police!" mindset isn't very common in the UK (so far as I know)... So the police don't get involved in many of the school and domestic issues that are commonly dealt with by US police.
This bit is quite erroneous. Most major cities will have this mindset very much (especially in the more Americanized areas), and the UK is gradually experiencing a widening gap between the classes, as well as the general mistrust of youths in sports clothes (of which they are without number) by the police, and a general hatred of the police by the youths. Police do frequently patrol troublesome schools, but on a case by case basis.
They are also better trained, as Europe in general is more willing to pay for services than we are over here.
Well they are very well trained, but you should also keep in mind that countries in Europe like Great Britain have cut spending and the size of their police force, whilst still maintaining a decrease in crime.
(US police are fairly lightly armed overall by world standards)
Over here they're the poster-boys for military like police :P

We had a rather famous advert on the metro a while back of a split screen showing a British policeman in his blue attire looking glum and on the other side, this bulking mass of guns and muscle (with added sunglasses) which while looking absolutely awesome, was ultimately satirical in nature and it was pretty obvious this just wouldn't work here.

One of the most convincing arguments for banning guns I've heard from a minority of Americans comes from those who want to ban guns if the police follow the same law as the civilians, leaving the guns to specialist units.

Not certain you understood me here. It is extremely common over here for people to throw coffee, scream, or spit at police when getting pulled over for running a red (stop) light, told not to walk down the center of the street, or or other trivial situations. To a very real extent, it's not simple distrust or tension. It's outright, active hatred of the police and everything they stand for. If it's that bad over there, I freely admit ignorance. As for the rest, I wasn't referring to patrolling of problem schools or domestic violence. Police have often been called into schools because a student wrote on a desk, shouted at a teacher, was tardy, or committed some other minor rules infraction. The schools are afraid to discipline in any way because people are so quick to sue. On the domestic front. police are routinely called in to deal with unruly children. Not violently unruly, just disobedient.

They are also better trained, as Europe in general is more willing to pay for services than we are over here.

Your police were funded extremely highly relative to ours before you began cuts, and I don't think your current levels are down to what ours were before cuts started. I should point out that our crime rate is also dropping overall.

I suspect there's a fair bit of inaccuracy here, either accidental or deliberate. In most US cities, each cop carries a pistol, and each car carries a single shotgun. Outside of SWAT teams and riot police (which are equipped with tear gas launchers), these are usually the only lethal weapons in the department. The also carry tasers and/or pepper spray. That's it. For most officers, the pistol is never used. Outside of storage, maintenance and practice, it's fairly rare for it to even leave the holster.

Same hatred, different reaction, other reason.

This is very much wtf worthy o_O

Cartoonish satire, it was very much deliberately exaggerated for comedic effect.

Just came back from a WTF that truly cemented my status as a weirdness magnet:

I injured myself. Eating chicken wings.

So, girlfriend and I were out at the local wing joint, and we order our usual. I dig into my wings, and have to stop after six, because it's too painful to eat. I figured I was just having a low-heat-tolerance day and decided to tap out. Went to the bathroom to wash my hands and face and...I'm bleeding from the tongue. Not really sure how that happened, but it looks like I have a puncture wound in the middle of my tongue. I'm sure I didn't like...stab myself with a wing or anything.

WTF ???

Ulcer or... something along those lines. I know you can get something similar on the inside of your lip, so I'd imagine the tongue's not sacrosanct. Or a bone gotcha'.

Time shenanigans.
You once had a tongue piercing, but due to messing up the time line you never actually got it done. That wound is a relic of this other time line that we were meant to be in.
Now you are going to have to go back in time to stop somebody from messing up the time line. Protip: Don't be surprised in your future self is here to try and stop you from messing up the time line. It is how these things normally pan out. I would advice against killing him, or you might find yourself getting killed by your past self in your future, that just happens to be in the past.

Possible Yoda movie.

So we're basically going to be seeing a second Expanded Universe, except with generically shit films instead of novels of varying quality?

It's a little early to be making judgements, isn't it?

Shh. I know the snark was mostly unjustified. Though if they end up making Thrawn movies and screw them up, I'm going to be able to say that I called it years before. :P

At the very least the franchise might improve a bit if Lucas doesn't have his claws as deeply buried in it.
