So you basically came close to nirvana?
Or maybe a very bad hangover

The worst part about tonight is that I'm going to come close to throwing up, but I'm going to remember all these precautions I made in case I throw up, but I'm not going to throw up because I made all the precautions.

A new year, new books!
And first thing we learn this year, the first thing ever that people will learn in physics, iiiiis....

*opens textbook*

The special theory of relativity, and the compression formula (Ln = Li*sqrt(1 - v^2 / c^2)), o how much moving at a speed will compress the object's length to an observer)...?
Not kinematics, but the ... special theory of relativity?

This doesn't bode well... :( After that is the gravity lens effect, for some reason. Keep in mind this is the first thing students learn in high school physics.

Now I don't know if you're implying it's too hard or too simple. If the latter: My one year of Uni physics re-did the entire high school Newtonian physics course, just going in deeper per subject. It's possible you get the same material, but harder?

Well, this is the first thing you learn. Eveeer. >.>
Special relativity doesn't seem like a good starting point to me, is all.

They started high school physics with special relativity, not something simple like friction, lenses, gravity, or electromagnetism? That's pretty hardcore.

Well, could be it's just showing off to get the interest of people. Like how chemistry often starts with combustion, fire and explosives.

Or they're not following the order of the textbook, I've had that happen as well. Starting in chapter 14 and stuff.

Ok so in this book there is a rogue planet about to come close to several stars for about 50 years. The people of the galaxy then spend nearly a century terraforming it and building cities and by the time they finished it was already moving away from the stars.

Apparently George R R Martin thought this was a plausible premise???

First off, how old is it? The older the sci-fi, the pulpier it tends to be.

Also, not all sci-fi is hard-core no-physics-breaking-ever stuff. I actually tend to enjoy the sillier stuff.

I don't think it's the science that's the issue.
It's that people aren't so stupid as to invest so much into something that'll disappear.

Hell, I'd probably sign up. A wandering colony of various intelligent species traveling to new solar systems and seeing new sights? That's something out of a myth or fairy tail right there.
