5'3" sounds like a fairly improper height for action-heroing, though.
Aw, you're no fun.

5'3" sounds like a fairly improper height for action-heroing, though. Being able to reach high shelves is a plus. (Admittedly the crazy energy whip thing would help with that.) Also, this:

Quote from: Super Metroid's Player's Guide
(paraphrased) Samus is a young blonde woman, who is 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m) tall and weighs 198 pounds (90 kg) without her armor.
You know the media's fucked when the mere appearance of a capable woman is supposed to be a statement.

Remember when games were sometimes different from each other and / or what you expected???
Please remove nostalgia glasses before posting.  Games in the past took advantage of what genre was popular, we simply don't remember the bad ones because they weren't played that often or most of us were too young to care.  There are uncountable early 1990s 2D platformers that are basically carbon copies of one another cashing on the times; only the best are remembered now.  The same will happen with the current popular genres, only the best/best-selling will be remembered.

Yeah, I sure miss when I played Doom and shot things whilst sometimes pressing as switch. And then I went and played Blood where I shot things whilst sometimes pressing a switch. On to Wolfenstein where I shot things and sometimes pressed a switch.

Point made. Though you can probably punch people in half without power armor, to your credit.

Hahaha, okay, you got me.  :) But hey dudes! Switches! Where have they gone?

(I still play Doom 2 often so I guess I *do* miss those times)

Jervill - you are very much correct, but we remember games from the past like Mario and Megaman and Sonic (given the limitations on what sort of games you could actually have at the times, moderately different.) Today, what sort of games will be remembered? Halo and Call of Duty and Gears 571 - I quite like these but they are 'bad' apparently eh I guess we'll have Portal 2 and Half-Life 2 and uhh umm BRAIN WORK DWARF FORTRESS HOPEFULLY

I think the thing was back in the day you had computational reasons / limits why most games were 2d platformers. These days... eh, I don't know. There are still lots of good games around that I enjoy.

I was mainly having a go at the flanderisation of Samus. If you can find me a female heroine who doesn't look like a supermodel these days, then I'll be surprised. They probably exist, but I don't know of them.

I love that CSTDT website.

Quote
The main purpose of women on Earth (that is, what aliens have programmed them to
do) is to enslave men via relationships. Women are obsessed with relationships
and love (due to alien programming), and don't care about anything else in life.
They would have men believe that being in a relationship is one of the most
important things in existence, not realizing that men couldn't care less about
being in a relationship--and rightfully so. Furthermore, women force men to
waste their precious time and resources on them. This demonic charade (i.e.,
relationships) has gone on for far too long and obviously has no end in sight.
Thus, you can blame women for the downfall and utter hopelessness of
humanity...Another thing that makes women insufferable is the fact that they
are, essentially, babies. That is, they possess the emotional maturity of a
4-year-old boy. Women cry, throw fits, and need men to take care of them. Um, an
adult shouldn't need someone else to take care of them.
This actually, genuinely sounds like a child. Someone who is angry at his mom, and has not has the talk yet.

An old woman wandered into my office without knocking, shuffled in front of my desk, put down a plate of something, and without really pausing her shuffling said something to the muffled tune of "my grandson, thank you thank you, here Mutton." She then shuffled her way right back out my door and presumably right back wherever she came from.... I just sorta leaned over my desk and watched her as she went with a confused look on my face.

I can only presume I've been given a plate of sheep, and seeing as I have no idea where to return the dish, a dish...? Either that or she just politely served me her grandson, "Mutton." I choose to believe the former.

Good job Japan, reminding us again and again what they think of women ._.

Umm ... like western protrayal of females in games is any better ? :/

5'3" is actually above the average height of a female in Japan ... not sexist if that's your reality.

I mean that people in the future are generally portrayed as "taller", thanks to the way average heights have been increasing in the past hundred years or so thanks to better nutrition and health care (according to some studies, may or may not be true).

Even with big increase in Japanese height since WWII, 5'3" is still above average for a Japanese female. And there's no real expectation that heights are going to keep increasing (overfed people just get fat now, not taller). Low height was really due to malnourishment.

Also, in the future with machines to do everything, short height might actually be selected for (e.g. for space exploration / colonization they might possibly even prefer lighter candidates, leading to selection pressure for shortness in space colonization).
