Thanks, but I have never believed in the idea of deterrence (scaring others not to do something by making examples). It just doesn't work. Every criminal law seems aimed at that, but we still have crime....

There are tons of scammers out there. They all taste terrible and I couldn't chew them all if I tried. They're the equivalent of real life trolls and it's somewhat tragic.

Truean, you are the only logical, sensible human being involved in the Justice Department that I've met. Deterrence is useless. I think rehabilitation is a better choice, but there's some huge caveats there, like the person has to want it, amongst other things.

You know, I'm legitimately curious about something: what do people see in games like League of Legends and DOTA? I tried LoL for about 40 minutes once, and that was one of the very few times a game gave me an honest to god headache. Trying another route, I tried watching some of my favorite youtube commentators play the game, but I've yet to finish a single video as even the most entertaining people are just unable to spin it into anything remotely enjoyable to even watch.

Now, I'm opting for a purely intellectual explanation, I look at Penny Arcade's series, Extra Credits, and they give me something of an idea.

I look back at the videos though, and it just blows my mind, how is this so popular?! I can understand Facebook games, they're just little things exploiting a website which itself exploits and facilitates society's downward spiral into complete social inadequacy, with a bucket of psychological tricks thrown in for good measure.

This though? I just don't get it, and that really bothers me. I like thinking I have atleast a good grasp on how the world around me works, but this just escapes me. It's not that people can have differing tastes that bothers me, it's that I simply have no idea how these tastes can exist in such a large quantity. Can anyone provide a bit of insight?

There's a lot of things about the game design that are simply addictive as all hell.  I end up miserable after 2/3 of the games I play, and yet it still has a really strong pull on me.

You know how rpg elements are really addicting?  Watching those numbers grow?  You know how one of the most fun parts of an rpg is starting a new character?  Imagine building an rpg character to max level in about 25 min and then starting over with a new one every 20-40 min.  It throws those dopamine-trigger level-ups and equipment boosts at a hyper fast pace.

Then there's the combat.  It does a really good job of tension build-up, then release.  You have these really long stand-offs in lane where you're poking away at each other and testing for vulnerabilities.  Then something happens and *BLABLABLAKAPOWKRMSAKBLAM* and it's over.  If you won you're like "YEEEEAAAAH FUCKING NAILED IT!" and you get to punctuate your victory with about 30 seconds of dominant rampaging progress as you knock down the enemy towers and make a bunch of gold and stuff without opposition.  If you lost you're like "GRRRRR I'M GONNA GET THAT FUCKER" and you buy a whole bunch of stuff when you respawn in base that has you thinking "I'll win the next one now that I have this stuff."  And you run back out all hyper-focused. 

Then if you win the match you're like "FUCK YEAH I WAS SO AWESOME THERE'S NO WAY I CAN STOP NOW!".  If you lose the match you're like "FUCK THAT SHIT THAT WAS ALL WRONG I CAN'T END LIKE THAT!"

Basically if you're the slightest bit competitive or susceptible to rpg addiction, LoL is meth-crack-heroine.  The core gameplay formula is actually great, but there are certain things about the implementation of that formula that I absolutely hate.  I really think LoL itself is a horrible game, but I'd like to see someone make a similar game that is less competitive and more fun.  Tone down the pacing and the tendency for fights to be resolved in instant !!gotcha!! assassinations and the horrible horrible snowballing, and it would be a really fun game.  Those things turn it into a rrraaaaaggggeee machine.  You're more likely to get really pissed off than to have fun.

I just noticed a little notice at the bottom of Google saying that a result for what I was searching was pulled because of a copywrite claim, and the link to get more information was dead.

What the fuck google. Why would you not show something because a copy write claim. If the other people want they can go squabble in court, but not my precious google. If something actually exists I see no reason for google to not link to it (other then like, porn and fox news and other things damaging to children which maybe a blocker parents could put in place for) Google is not the internet police.


Oh, also, on MOBA games. The rush from winning is such a high. Greater then any other game I have played to be honest. The feeling when you lose though and the community are not worth it to me.

I think what LoL does is sort of take the most intense part of an RTS -- the base rush/base defense phase, and just gives you that portion over and over. With the emotional responses that SG noted above.

I actually find Demigod to be a more relaxed, enjoyable take on the genre, but that's just me. Sadly, Demigod suffers from a low number of characters and no additional content being made for it. And it's not free, which is a BIG plus for LoL. I've been on hiatus due to computer problems, but I'm level 29 with a dozen or more characters and I haven't spent a dime on the game.



EDIT: Also, got an email (because I'm on a security unit) from DoJ saying that certain components needed an immediate patch. However, the update describing the patch (and the vulnerability) is itself classified above my level. WTF? "Here, run this patch. No, we can't tell you what it does." Um, how about hell no?

I was playing a DnD game with some of my friends at school today.
Well, it was interesting,
I was playing a Monk, one of us was a Fighter, another a Rogue, and the fourth one was a Cleric.
We were trying to go to the execution of one of us, a Wizard, in the city of Luskan.
Well, I was climbing to the top of a building, to get a look around, and a guard told me to get down.
I do a flip off the building and we all get arrested for resisting arrest.
The Rogue gets away, I manage to escape into the sewers, and our Fighter and Cleric are arrested.
I come out of the sewers, and ask a civilian where the northern gate is.
He tells me it's down an alleyway, and I get a crap intelligence roll. I go down the alley.
Civilian follows me, pulls a crossbow, shoots, and misses.
I try to climb up a wall.
He shoots me in the knee, I fall off the wall, and am currently unconscious.
I now am down to 4 HP, out of 8.
So, one of us isn't arrested/kidnapped so far.
