Now I'm hearing that the guy also had two knives, no significant criminal record, and no clip in the pistol.

Some people are saying set-up, as this guy is stepping down today and represents a party who's stated objective is to protect the rights of the Turkish Bulgarian minority. Both the target and the assassin are Turkish Bulgarians.

Yeah, I'm going to call staged on that. The guy pulled a gun on the politician and obviously intended to use it, but when it misfired he just stood around and pushed the politician a bit. The bodyguards didn't shoot (or even handcuff!) the guy that just tried to shoot the politician they were protecting, and in fact did almost nothing but push him to the ground and deliver a few halfhearted kicks. Completely real, sure.
