I did read it, and yeah I didn't really buy into it, but I honestly just chose not to get involved. When people start saying stuff like that... it's just sort of a red flag that says that it's probably not going to be a very productive conversation.

In fact a lot of the debates I've read through recently don't seem to be very good ones.

My intent wasn't to annoy, it was an arguement that required a specific flow of arguements.

I made it obvious specifically so no one would get annoyed and so I would get called out.

No the arguement followed a straight line that was obvious, it is just that in order to flow right I needed to be called on it.

Otherwise my arguement would have been like

"Ok, take Orwell and now lets pretend he was evil! Does him being evil mean anything?"

Which is a weaker way of saying it.

I banked on the conversation flowing in a certain way and it didn't end up that way. I was called out on meandering mind you, so I chose that to make my main arguement against the meaning of the thread.

The problem with this imaginary wrongdoings bit is that because it's imaginary you just create that separation in a vacuum. Someone who is actually racist, sexist, bigoted or otherwise has an opinion or something that someone will find objectionable it's not gonna be something that can exist separate from their work. Even at someones best those views will paint someones work, writing and speech.

Lovecraft was racist to a pretty big extent and he despised and feared the sea and fish. This is unmistakably present in his works even if it's not the focus of them. If what you were joking about George Orwell was true at all it would be present in his work in some form. But it's not so you shoot your point in the foot before it even gets out the door and waste everyone's time, especially your own.

If Orwell was evil that obviously inspired his works. He couldn't have written his works without it affecting it.

In the same way that Lovecraft's fear of the sea was "obviously" an inspiration.

It only doesn't factor in if you apply the work to non-evil Orwell. Yet this is the work of Evil Orwell.

I don't know about Lovecraft fearing the sea and fish not being the focus of his work. Several of his stories have one or both as a main theme, just eldritch-ed out. Call of Cthulhu, Shadow over Innsmouth, Mountains of Madness...

I wonder if he knew how to swim.
