Because you expect armed gunmen to be going after the president. Because you can't prevent assassination attempts with simple regulation the way you can with shooting sprees. Oh, and yes, the gun-free school zones caused the shooting because they provide good targets. Yes, the problem is certainly not that people willing to murder a bunch of children can get guns in the first place, it's that the teachers weren't armed to the teeth.
