Fire is material, though. Flames are (essentially) glowing gases. Incidentally, fire is also affected by gravity; a candle flame in near-zero gravity tends to be nearly spherical and blue, rather than tapered and yellowish.

Burning is a reaction. Fire (or more precisely 'on fire') is a description of the state of matter which is burning. 'Fire' is only a verb in the context of lighting something on fire (or discharging a ranged weapon); you set something on fire by firing it. You do not set something on fire by fire it.

RE: classical elements: Duh. We also don't think that the universe is divide into heavenly spheres with the stars and planets being little dots affixed to them.
