I'd think a machete would be against dorm policy...

... that said, if you're actually intending to crawl around those mountains there are places with pretty heavy forest/undergrowth, or at least there was in the parts I went through. So... maybe. Assuming whoever owns the land in question wouldn't skin you for messing up their beautiful trees.

Somehow I don't think the eternally soused is going to be crawling around the parts of the mountain that might actually need that, though. On the bright(?) side, if he does, there's a decent chance something ends up eating him.

A machete is very much against dorm policy, which is why he isn't keeping it here long. In fact, he just walked out with it.

He's going on a pledge retreat in Pisgah Forest, never been there so I don't know if a machete is warranted.

Doesn't matter to me in any case, I get to have the weekend to myself.

There is a very real possibility of them using it in a pointless or innapropriate scenario and coming back with less fingers, hands or limbs than they had when leaving. This may not be a bad thing.

A friend and I once went camping, I was wearing a gas mask and carrying an axe, he was wearing a balaclava and carrying two machetes. I think we took about 10 years off the lives of the people who were packing up when we arrived.

Once, me and several friends were going to go down by the lake and have a bonfire. We all got all high as hell and a bit drunk, and started chopping kindling, because we are brilliant. One of them halfway cut off one of his fingers, so we take him back inside, and his parents (we were at his house) wrapped it up and everything, then gave him a shitpile of drugs.
About ten minutes later, he was like, "Lesss go shtart the fire guyss."
Ha, no. We learned our lesson already. You stay here, WE'LL go start the fire.

Machetes are actually very good chopping tools and useful to have in the woods if you're doing legit camping. Basically a different type of axe, functionally. It's even somewhat usefuly just for regular camping honestly. Personally, I don't use one - my shovel-pick and knife are are enough for the situations I get into, but I generally don't do much traveling in thick undergrowth or any of the "normal-use-scenarious" for a machete.
