I just saw the awesome new SimCity gameplay demo.

And learned that there will not be a single player.

You can play by "yourself", but you HAVE to be online and you HAVE to interact with other players in order to play effectively and unlock most of the stuff.

And there will be day 1 $20 "dlc" that's practically mandatory to enjoy the game.


I know this should be a WTF, but /why would a game company do this/? (Answer: to make money, but still, that vid gave me mood whiplash.)

So, the new SimCity is the combination of all the crapiest ideas in recent gaming?
From your post alone:
Always-on DRM
No offline mode
Social interation stuffed in for no apparent reason
Unlocks based on said duct-taped on interation
Day 1 DLC (and one that costs as much as a higher-end indie game at that!)
Mandatory dlc to actually enjoy game

I think all we're missing is SecuROM and maybe also making it being Origin-only and we'd have everything important.

It depends on the genre of the day. Sometimes they'll be two stories tall and thirsting for blood, other times they'll be chibi catpeople.
