Its things like this that really show how much of a wild card humanity is. Capsicin was evolved by plants specifically to drive off mammalian species so that birds would spread their seeds.

Imagine standing on a tiny spec of land, that you had a one in a million chance of finding in the ocean deep. Looking over the infinite horizon of waves and being willing to sail in a canoe far beyond sight of land with no hope of ever returning. And then you sail until you reach Hawaii. And then your descendants decide Hawaii isn't so great, and they sail beyond the end of the world again.

Keep in mind that those half-inch spiders include the black widow and the brown recluse, two of the deadliest spiders on Earth. The rest of them are mostly harmless of course.
