No argument that he's a git, nor that he should have EXPECTED that reaction from a bunch of people in those circumstances. I don't feel sorry for what happened to him after he hit the lady, either. BUT:

1. Like it or not, it is his right to videotape people in public places. You do NOT need anyone's permission to videotape them in public as long as it is not a location in which one should expect privacy (bedroom, bathroom, etc).
2. I also don't feel particularly sorry for the woman who got hit, since she attempted to steal (or at least mess with) his private property. THAT was illegal. Of course, hitting her for it was also illegal, and makes the guy seem like even more of an arsehat.
3. Vorthon, you actually happen to be wrong. Canada has roughly the same rules as the US; filming people in public without their consent is totally okay.

Hey, I said IIRC. My memory on these kind of things is fuzzy at best. At worst it's like some kind of Escher-esque nightmare.

Sirus, you should probably read where I agreed that he is a git. I'll ignore the rest of your post since you're just setting up a strawman.

Pnx - it was a charity hand-out, not a restaurant. Therefore I assume it was in an open, public space. I don't think he was 'following people around' - he was (presumably) filming them in a line. The original quote said he was 'fairly close' to them, which may or may not be 'shoving his camera RIGHT in their face'. If he was doing that, I agree, he was probably violating their personal space. If he was just standing back or walking up and down the line at a distance and filming them, though, he wasn't doing anything other than being an annoying buffoon, and there is no law which says 'if somebody is an annoying buffoon and is filming you, you may attempt to steal or damage their camera', as far as I know.

I would think that the guy's right to film people in public space without permission ends when those people request that he stop filming them.  I'm pretty sure he would need permission if he had any intent to publish the footage, also.  If he ignores someone's request not to be filmed and they want to prevent footage of themselves from being published, then I believe they're within their rights to take that footage away from him.  The camera may be his property, but a person can also claim legal ownership of their own likeness, which is now contained in his camera.

If not, then this is one of those situations where nobody should really give a damn about legality.  Only common sensibility and good faith can govern the situation.  As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't matter whether or not he was within his rights if there is also widespread agreement that his behavior was reprehensible, and this is one of the major reasons I'm an anarchist.  Absolutes don't work in situations like this.

Anyway, this is a rather pointless argument, and I am being arbitrary, sorry. Let's get on with the WTF!

Yeah. Yesterday I accidentally dropped a giant jar of catnip on the carpet in this room. Before I could clean it up, my cat ran over and *stuffed* his head in there. It looked like the scene at the end of Scarface where Tony facedives into the giant pile of cocaine.

Edit:
While searching for the relevant image from the movie, I found this... O.o

The internet situation in my office building is ridiculous.

There are about 7-10 office/commercial tenants in one building. There are 3 secure wireless networks privately held by 3 tenants and a wired broadband connection.... This means the phone company is probably getting around.... $250/month so far.

This... is... stupid.

We're all essentially in one big old fancy manor home.... Why not have one or perhaps two wireless networks everyone has the security key to? Everybody pitch in and just share it/save craploads of money. WHY DID NO ONE THINK OF THIS?

Is there only one bottleneck of internet wiring?
Because if that's true, it is stupid. >.> S'not like it's faster with more broadbands.
