I think it's "them as a gender-neutral 3rd person referant, which is politer than calling freeformschooler it".

Or as Daffy Duck might say, "Pronoun trouble."

Pronouns shifting over to other slots, especially vacant slots, are a pretty common thing in all languages! (moreso in declension langues, even)

But yeah, whole life => lie.

You can indeed, especially in cases where the gender of the referrant is either unknown or unimportant.

Example: "I went by the clerk's office today." "Did you remember to give them that form?"

In Southern US English, "y'all" can be used as a 2nd-person plural or a 2nd-person singular, depending on the context.
