In my defense, my response had absolutely nothing to do with Monty Python - I've never been a big fan, so I didn't even catch the reference until it was mentioned. I was purely making fun of Canadians and their 'eh?' tendency. Now I see why it fell so flat, though.

To be perfectly honest, I am mildly tempted to pick up my pitchfork and follow him on a quest.

I haven't respected a nonfictional person this much since Emperor Norton, Protector of Mexico.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I would like to thank everyone for not making the tired response to that.
Good for you then that I was asleep when you posted that. :P

Bah. You're all Philistines. :P
bah. you're Morgan Freeman.

no, seriously, after another forumer said they read everything in Morgan Freeman's voice on these forums, I've been infected, too  :o

Try the Dwarven Childcare Thread in his voice. It's... interesting.  :-\

EDIT:
I saw a man on a horse today, riding down the highway. Here's the weird part: he was wearing chain armor, a tunic, and a helmet. There's no ren-fairs in the area, so it was a complete mystery to me.

Turns out it's some dude from Quebec riding across the country.
I would see no other choice of option other than joining this person's cause.
That's right. He must be the king!
Canada: Now with lolwat random King of honourable calvarymen!
But how can we tell he's the King?

Who cares! Does he need any soldiers?

I am tempted to don my armor and march out to join him.

I think it's "them as a gender-neutral 3rd person referant, which is politer than calling freeformschooler it".

Or as Daffy Duck might say, "Pronoun trouble."

You can use 'them' to refer to a single person?

My whole life is a lie!

Pronouns shifting over to other slots, especially vacant slots, are a pretty common thing in all languages! (moreso in declension langues, even)

But yeah, whole life => lie.

You can indeed, especially in cases where the gender of the referrant is either unknown or unimportant.

Example: "I went by the clerk's office today." "Did you remember to give them that form?"

In Southern US English, "y'all" can be used as a 2nd-person plural or a 2nd-person singular, depending on the context.
