Once, I went to a theater where a "small" popcorn was $10. Medium and large were $12 and $20. They were really huge, but even so, I feel like it was way more than it should have been.

did you know that most theaters generally only get about a quarter ($0.25 USD) in profit per ticket they sell? Due to that nearly all of their profit comes from ridiculous markups on their foodstuffs

A large portion of the box office revenue goes to the people who made and paid for the film, not the theater, and the theater fields all the costs of showing films. Quite often, they are actually taking a loss, even with tickets higher priced than that. They have to jack up concession prices and show all those pre-film advertisements to stay in the black. Simply put, theater chains aren't in the business of showing movies, they're in the business of selling concessions. If they didn't offer concessions (or if enough people snuck food in), they'd quickly go out of business.
