Couldn't NASA have found a better spot to take time-lapse images of the stars? O_o

Site is operated by NASA, but photos are usually from different sources. ("Setting up on a summer night, photographer Mike Rosinski began his exposures, initially planning to capture about 45-55 minutes worth of star trails from his yard in Hartland, Michigan, USA. But he dozed, only to awaken some 3 hours later to find his camera had continued to run until the battery died.")

I've only seen fire worms. But then again Wikipedia seems to count those as a kind of firefly.

Wikipedia is silly. Worms can't fly.

They can when they are grubs... Or will at least.
Glow worms aren't real worms.

Nope, but "glow worms" aren't the same kind of bug as fireflies either, and not all of them can fly.

I also have a feeling that this is going to be a brood year for cicadas around here. Last year was supposed to be the big year for Brood XIX (The Great Southern Brood), but we didn't get but a handful around us. But I'm already hearing them at night now. And Brood II isn't supposed to hatch until next year, so I dunno where these are coming from...

(If anyone's wondering what the hell I'm talking about...)

Cicada broods are one of the most awesome "WTF Nature?" experiences...if we do have a big brood hatch this year, I'll try to get some recordings (although no recording can really do justice to the sound...)

I finally got the Gnome Chompsky referecnce from left 4 dead 2.  In the carnival themed campaign in the game, there's an achievement for rescuing a garden gnome, whose name is Gnome Chompsky.

While browsing through some programming theory stuff on wikipedia, I found out about Noam Chomsky.

Reference Secured!

Dat feeling when you wake up, and hear weird ass noises outside.  Then can't seem to avoid finding cicada larva and carcasses everywhere.

Oh yes, I remember the last visit from XIX. My dog LOVED eating them. The sound, though...

We got some in the NC Piedmont, but it wasn't until late in the summer. I hear other parts of NC, SC, and TN and such did better, but I was really disappointed because I love cicadas and their beautiful song. I was really looking forward to that. It seemed like we got as many last year as we had a couple years prior with premature emergences.

aksdjfk Excuse me, I missed the part where you said you're already hearing them. In March??

This year is gonna be weird...

Narp. It was the firefly field or the gater swamp, they made their choice.
NASA has really suffered from funding cuts.
as for the US army that gets SO much more money than NASA...

yeah... humans are idiots.
Considering I'm going into the air force soon, I may end up hating that policy a little bit less.

Still think NASA should gat a big chunk of the budget though.

Y'know, quite a bit of that money goes towards keeping our boys and girls alive.
In my mind, I'd rather a robot that cost $20 million to develop gets blown up by an IED than an actual person. Robots are fixable and replaceable.

Yeah, well all that will amount to jack shit if we don't get off the planet eventually. Eggs and baskets, people, eggs and baskets.
