I was under the impression Americans get q whole lot of more holidays, though? Of course, that doesn't make up for all of it, but you could think of it as a band aid least. Or maybe I'm thinking of Spain? I'm suddenly very uncertain.

Depends on what you do for a living. Most restaurants are open on holidays, as are some grocery and bargain stores. If you work as an accountant or something, you usually get more days off.

Economic problems are not linear. They're exponential, maybe even logarithmic. The US is the only developed country with an economy on such  a large scale, so the strain shows more.

They are, in fact, even inverse to each other. The faster one goes, the slower the other rises. So yeah.
