This, pretty much. Most of it was just disbelief. It really didn't help when they pulled out a billfold of coupons thicker than the cash they used to pay for it all.

Speaking of coupons, I know a guy who has a hobby of collecting enough coupons to actually make money by buying random crap. Seriously, who does that?

It isn't unless they get very different coupons than I get, which are almost covered in fine print restricting usage to make sure things like that don't happen.

I think he uses a combination of sales, percent-off coupons, and $1 off coupons to get a tiny bit under zero. I don't know if he uses coupons from different compatible sources or if he just bluffs his way through having mutually exclusive coupons.

I saw a news story on a mom who does that.  She essentially feeds her family for free... but she also plainly admitted that the amount of effort she puts into collecting and organizing all those coupons is roughly equivalent to a full-time job.  Several hours every day.

I've seen it in action. It's not pretty. To get to where you're any good at doing that, you have to obsess over it.
