Yeah, I used to have a regular APM (Actions Per Minute) of about 300 a few years ago without spamming and was pretty good overall on US East and West Severs, but I'm so out of practice that it's not even funny. I played Terran and Toss in BW. Honestly, foreigners (I.E. people not from Korea) don't usually place well in world SC competitions, or at least they haven't historically in BW. SCII is a very different game, but I'm gonna go ahead and say their culture of constant practice still gives them an edge. I really, really miss vultures and spider mines, but I'm rather happy they fixed the stupid magic box trick for mutalisk stacking (God that was annoying). [you selected 11 mutas and one larva to make them basically a superorganism the game wouldn't let your opponent properly target.
They moved and attacked in perfect unison. July Zerg found it and JaeDong perfected it. Your only hope was to scout it and make lots of marines and turrets, with an irradiate if possible]
SC is, or at least was, about pre planning and practicing things into muscle memory so you could save your mental resources to improvise and deal with all the unknowns that were always there (sans maphack). It was insane improvisation like using terran buildings (most of which fly) to hover over a small group of spider mines so the human opponent literally can't see the mine (because the flying building is in the way) to either a.) know it is there, or b.) target it to shoot it before it deals that lovely 110 explosive damage.
Boxer's Allied Mines was fun, but somehow that got banned in league play, though it was awesome and fair in my opinion. That doesn't even begin to go into the newer players, like
Flash or though he's notoriously cocky, firebathero.
In fact if you really want one of the best matches I've seen: FirebatHero v. Savior is absolutely god damn insane. Savior's Zerg positively kills Firebathero and forces him to abandon his base. He floats over every single building he can and abandons the rest to kill everything savior throws at him until savior runs out of minerals, fighting him off tooth and nail the entire time. Part II. He then does it again.....
In oversimplified sum, I have loved starcraft for over 10 years and probably always will. I've studied it for years and could talk about it for hours. There are still tons of old games online from the Korean Pros and there are people who actually make a decent living off commentating starcraft on youtube.
Barbarossa, if you're protoss and actually considering any tournament then you'll want to look at
Bisu.
He invented the cannon covered fast expo (aka bisu build), with corsair to scout/overlord kill and then DT (though it was flexible enough to do lots of things including reaver drops and speed zealots). It can be adapted fairly well to SCII.
http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft/Main_PageBest of luck and have fun, but don't spend too much time on it.
