I THOUGHT THAT NYAN CAT INTRODUCED IT TO THE INTERNETS!

NOT SOME ANIME SINGER!

What. The. Fuck. Japan.

I'd embed it, but then i seriously think it might go against forum rules from what
i saw in the video.

Honestly? That song is a Touhou meme. Vocaloid is entirely different. And that whole Vocaloid thing is based on anime characters that "sing" IRL. The concerts are background musicians playing while an anime girl dancing on the screen lip-synching the words. And people eat it up.

...Funnily enough, i also happened to see a Giantess video in the "related videos" thingamajig.

...

...

WHAT THE HELL, AMERICA/JAPAN?!

Also, I KNOW THAT. BUT STILL. WTF.

Compare PRGuitarMan's Nyan Cat page (where it originated)[/ur]

[url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwKFCj1K7uY]to this video.

The dates give Touhou the lead. However, it IS a Vocaloid song. No one ever remember that except Vocaloid fanboys though. The touhou ones do, however.

Not exactly.

Vocaloids are voice synthesisers. That is, Microsoft Sam style computer voices designed to sing. The more popular of these have been assigned avatars. Most of the songs and animations are fan written, so eventually you end up with a crowd sourced pop star.

Then, this being Japan, they have acquired massive cults fan bases, perverted versions and the live concerts... wait, LA? IT'S SPREADING!

EDIT: I mock this when this utter nonsense was the last concert I was at.

Regarding swastika and manji use, the best way I can describe it is by paraphasing a guy Microsoft on why a swastika/manji was an Xbox Live instaban: basically, the Sunnis is strongly related to the Holocaust, despite its usage for ages preceding. 90+% of people will see one and make the association. A good portion of the time, there isn't really any opportunity to explain its cultural and historical significance outside of use by the Nazis.

An analogy could be this: suppose you're a senior in high school. Suppose you drink root beer from a glass bottle. Say you go through about 5 of them, and there's a picture of you with 5 empty dark brown glass bottles next to you.

Vocaloid is semi-popular because it has anime-style avatars assigned to the majority of the official ones and the more popular of the fan-made ones.

I'm saddened by people's ignorance on the subject of swastikas, but I suppose the WWII generation will have to die before it is not taboo anymore.

So I'm getting a haircut today. Stopped by some barber shop, just any old one.

My looking like a regular guy for appearances' sake is unfortunately just society being an ass. That said, I don't especially care about how it looks as long as its professional etc.

The old barber, who seems to work only on appointments, made it a point that I come to see him at 3PM for the appointment otherwise, "I'd be screwing him." I see what he was getting at, but it sort of makes me worry.  Has he had a lot of people cancel appointments on him for a haircut? Why?

Granted, I know I'm probably being stupid about the whole thing. People don't show up for appointments all the time. It's annoying as hell and costs money. Worse, you usually have to send them a stupid card with a teddy bear on it or something like, "O, did you forget? Please feel free to call our office to reschedule."

All the same, its sad that this guy has such a problem with that to the point where its the first thing he says to a new customer.... WTF people...? Guy charges $11/haircut; don't screw him....
Worst. Businessman. Evar.

Wow. Words cannot convey just how hard I just facepalmed. Personally, I would go somewhere else based on that alone.

Granted. He did ok though and frankly I'm one of the few people who truly does not give a shit about hair. Rather, I do give a shit about hair, but I can't have it how I want it anyhow, so meh.  :P

Then I drank some root beer. Not my problem if people jump to invalid conclusions.

Lemme toss that same logic back to you: Sikhs have been wearing turbans for centuries as a sign of their faith. Osama bin Laden wore a turban, despite not being a Sikh. Now, whenever Americans see people in turbans, they think of al-Qaeda and 9/11. Hence, all Sikhs should stop wearing turbans?

WRONG. Instead, people need to get a f**king clue (and a grip to go along with it).

The subtle knife (Golden Compass sequel) was supposedly cancelled because Catholics said it made them look evil, after the movie was bought out by MURRICA.

Seeming as the books are about killing God and is supposed to be the "atheist" answer to the Narnia books, yeah, it's pretty fair to say it makes them look evil. :P

Also, about the Swastika thing: IIRC, Hitler took it directly form Buddhism and then swung it around, claiming it as his own. Honestly, it's almost impossible to differentiate between these two symbols without looking directly at two of them simultaneously. Many Buddhist sects willingly do not use the symbol anymore, at least publicly.

No, the swastika has a long history of use in Europe as well (and probably the rest of the world too, seeming as how simple a figure it is), stone-age and onwards. A German 19th century "historian" (apostrophes because, really, how much of a damn did those guys back then give about the historical truth? ;)) made up a connection between all these findings from European civilizations and said that it meant there had been some kind of "master culture" there, which the proto-Nazi movement then adopted into their master-race philosophy.

Seriously? O_O
1. Lolwut where?
2. Atheist how?
3. Evil how?

Plus, I think the Atheist answer to  C.S. Lewis would probably go along the lines of:
Kids end up in war, Kids find magical wardrobe WHICH DOES NOT EXIST, find magical talking lion WHICH DOES NOT EXIST, who is actually a metaphor for Jesus WHO DOES NOT EXIST.  :P

Instead of the whole approach involving demons, magic, steampunk, magistratum e.t.c in the golden compass...

Your analogy is not equal. The turban is not the main symbol of al-Qaeda.
