Neat factoid:  Some species of spiders can survive being submerged in water for long periods of time, at least one for up to 40 hours.

To be fair, I have spared spiders that haven't been any real bother to me (generally the spindly-legged web-living spiders that stay out of the way; AKA- the Daddy Long-Legged types), and there are plenty of them. Not as horrifying as the hand spiders, but surprisingly helpful, as their trophy piles show. Kept the roach and ant population in control. I have yet to see the hand spiders prove themselves though, besides one or two bite marks I had to tend to one time or another. Bastards attack me in my sleep.

In a sense, I think I have spared some of those smaller spiders from those hand spiders a few times. I mean, I've seen devastated remains of some webs, as if they've been cannibalized by their larger buddies. They really do seem to be a menace.
