Just read an article about some pretty strong police brutality. A 57 year old man was shopping on Black Friday, and witnesses say they saw him put a game in the waistline on his pants. An officer handcuffed the man, and then something happened; - The old man was found to have "Hit the floor" face first...His head cracked, and his face was smashed to pieces. His little grandson was running up to him, sobbing. The bystanders did little but ooh and ah, until someone came through and got him medical attention. The old man will be in jail after his release from the hospital, for "Resisting arrest" and theft or somesort.

Wow, America...Wow. That's pretty bad, guys. Around here, if someone does something bad, they get handcuffed and brought to the station. There they're given some hot cocoa and a blanket, and a group of officers. At least it's a bit better than...This.

But, who knows. The old man could have had a firearm or somesuch (No weapons were found on him), or he could have actually been resisting arrest. Some comments:

"He deserved it."
"When an officer tells you to do something, you do it."
"See, kids? This is why we play nice with the cops."

From an eyewitness account I read, he was putting the game there so that he could use both of his hands.

If you haven't taken the store's property out of the store without paying for it, it doesn't matter where you put it. It can only be considered theft if you have intentionally and maliciously removed the property from it's owner.

True, but eyewitnesses don't always tell the truth, you know. Just look at how many "Bigfoot" and "Alien" sightings that we have...

He can still be charged with the attempt. It's up to the police, they could sentence him for a long time. Probably will, because he caused an officer to be humiliated.

Judges and juries aren't cops, they can only charge you as a suspect in crimes, not sentence you for them.

Welcome to America. The land of no rights and the police don't give a f**k about the rules. You piss them off, and they'll get revenge, even if they have to gank you in an alleyway.

No, until it is clear that he is attempting to exit the store with the stolen product they can't even charge him for attempt. No matter how incriminating in may be, putting a product (that you intent to buy) in your pants isn't a crime. That is, you know, why mall security and such who spot someone shoplifting usually doesn't approach the person until they're about to exit the shop.

Not that I believe he wasn't about to steal it. But there's no crime done yet.

.....Dude, you don't even live here. There's a lot of power abuse from the police, especially in certain corrupt districts, but the level you are describing doesn't really happen. And there are plenty of rights here, just not enough of them.

Eh, you're probably right. But he's still going down for resisting arrest, that can't be denied. I don't think that he was going to steal it anyways, he probably just wanted to keep a hold on it. What if they had a limited stock of that game? Someone else might grab it if he set it down for even a second.

I'm not talking about police following the law, I'm talking about police doing what they want.

Most cops here are decent enough people. Most also follow what they're told and not their own conscience. Also, there's a disproportionate number of power tripping ones because, in the words of my father (a former city councilman who had to deal with the local police station's antics all the time), "lots of them sign up just to try and be Rambo."

Lots of variables. Don't generalize :)

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Here's the thing, though: Usually, that's just not the case. The police have strict guidelines to deal with pretty much every situation. Yeah, now and again, you have some batshit power trip because people are people, but that's not the norm by any means.

Although, it would be pretty cool if all our cops were Batman.
