The shepherd's pie that I've had was basically like beef stew in a pot pie shell. With mashed potato on top and then baked till it kind of hardened on the outside.

Also, I'm just ribbing re: the food. But it is a common stereotype.

FWIW, I don't care for French cuisine either. Or really, much of any of Western European food. I'm good with German and Czech and Mediterranean (though less so for Spanish/Portugese cooking).

I have never eaten shepherd's pie with a pie shell. Whoever does that must  be very weird or took hte "pie" part very literal.

I've seen that argued (the same way that chop suey is supposedly a Californian invention), but like chop suey I'm not buying it.

Now the fortune cookie is a genuine "out of area" invention. A company tried to introduce fortune cookies into China in the early 1990's, and the general reaction was "WTF is this thing?"  :P
