My school administration thinks that swag is a bad word.
What kind of weird ass school do you go to where you catch a punishment for "bad words", anyway? o.O
That's the first time I've ever heard of anything like that.

I'm guessing that is my WTF moment for the day. I mean, seriously, what the hell is wrong with your school?

Schools (k-12) in the Bible Belt tend to have rules against cursing. Just saying a curse can get a write-up though nice teachers will give a warning, cursing at someone is an automatic write-up and possibly detention, cursing at a teacher can get a suspension.
I don't know about other regions, however.

Reminds me of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Controversies_about_the_word_%22niggardly%22

Yeah, but that at least sounds like a real bad word. What word does "swag" sound like?

To me it inspires something related to the genitalia, for some reason.

How...
What...
Why...
The Bible Belt is in the ultra-conservative Deep South of the US. We still have the blue laws (religion-based laws that restrict things like, say, cursing) in effect, although thankfully nobody's stupid enough to disobey those rules enough to get arrested.
There are rules against cursing on public transportation and in certain government buildings, and a person theoretically could get fined for "causing a disturbance," but the absolute worst I've ever heard of is people being forcibly removed from the bus/building/etc. for their cursing, since the police won't arrest anyone for it, since a blue law violator would win in court very easily.
Even so, the blue laws do still allow businesses and government operations to make rules against the use of curses, so schools disallow cursing.

It really has nothing to do with religion, and instead everything to do with "obscenity."

Yes, apparently words can be obscene. I don't get it myself, but there it is. People get offended by words all the time where I live. That is why there are rules against them in public schools. (though they rarely stopped someone from shouting "fuck" down the hallways)

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Wow, I knew that the deep south of the US was a bit... peculiar, but what happened to secularism? What the fuck happened to separation of church and state? In which century did they get stuck in?

Surely no earlier than 1492 :P

To me it sounds like treasure, and plundered booty and... ohhhhhhh.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Try 33AD. Although I don't think we stone anyone for saying "Jehovah".

Indiana has this crap, too... except they even punish proxy swear words.  I've seen kids get sent home for saying "freak" or "that sucks".  A couple teachers at my kid's school even go the extra mile and punish the word "hate".  Hiro could get in trouble for saying he hates vegetables.

It's so stupid, and we're very lucky that Hiro understands he can't talk in public the same way he talks at home.  We don't believe in censorship at all, and miraculously he is able to carry on like a sailor at home, yet hasn't got in trouble at school for language once.

The rain yesterday. I'm sitting at the bus stop and it starts raining. It's getting pretty heavy by the time the bus comes(late, as usual), and 2/3rds of the way home it's a complete torrent coming down.
When I get off the bus, nothing.

Also, there's a CAUTION: WET FLOOR sign on the floor here at the library. Only, it's a carpeted floor.

I've seen people slip on carpeted floors.

Okay, well, I've seen a person slip on a carpeted floor, but it just proves it could happen.

Besides, perhaps they don't want people who don't have shoes to step in the wetness...maybe?

Carpets can be quite slippery sometimes, but I guess their slipperiness isn't usually dependent on how we they are.
