Ok, PETA, honestly, what are you trying to do? Sea Kittens? Hardcore Pornography? Are you trying to help animals anymore or is that just a guise that you use to do silly shit?

I like the picture under "Create your own Sea Kitten." I'm going to love it and hug it and call it air-drowning.

That's an old campaign, but I find the idea that people eat fish because they don't have a cute enough name morbidly amusing.

It's an interesting concept, but seriously, freedom fries never became a thing for a reason, you can't force a word on people.

... Well, at the very least not on ALL people.

There's a certain amount of truth to that, which I've taken pains to point out to my daughter: we spend a lot more money saving furry, cute animals than we do saving scaly or slimy ones or things with exoskeletons that look like somebody's nightmare. Even though from a neutral standpoint, saving the giant panda doesn't have nearly the impact on its native ecosystem that saving small fish or certain varieties of water bug would have.

Of course, calling them Sea Kittens to a DF'er is probably likely to cause bigger problems. Like people dropping carp off 50m towers, terrified that they'll reproduce.  :P

The problem with PETA is that they take a good idea (animal welfare), then ramp it up to an unreasonable 11. They also don't have a lot of forethought, like when they "liberated" 6500 mink from a British fur farm, only for the little fuzzy buggers to rampage through the countryside.

I'd be curious to know PETA's stand on Dr. John Wamsley. He's an Australian environmentalist who's advocated the killing and skinning of feral cats in Australia in order to protect the indigenous species. Nice bloke, met him at Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary back in 1992. Very passionate about saving Australian wildlife and trying to get Australians to (I'm paraphrasing here, as it's been far too long for me to remember his exact words) "realize that they're Australians, not English colonists in a far off land". At Warrawong, there's a picture of him wearing a full-length coat made from about 30 feral cats. Kind of shocking at first, but the more I thought about it, I had to kind of agree with him. I mean, it's not the cats' fault for being what they are, but at the same time they just don't belong.

Growing up, one of the regular 'chores' I'd help my friends with on the nearby dairy farms was to saddle up or ride a go-kart and make a patrol circuit of the farm (could be a couple hundred acres), looking for feral dogs. If we found them, we shot them. It wasn't to be cruel, it was because they were a potential source of rabies and if left in place, tended to form larger and larger packs and would eventually start picking off calves or old cows when they were grazing.

I thought it was rabbits that Australia was infested with.

And giant whistling tarantulas. I had a close encounter with one of those somewhere off the Stuart Highway, close to Uluru. Came back from breakfast, went to open up my tent and sweep the sand out, and this huge bastard of a spider comes sauntering out of my tent, which had been closed up as soon as I got out of it that morning. So he was there in with me *all night*.  :o

I beat the hell out of it with the broom and it just stared at me, then turned and walked off into the desert. I think if it could have given me a middle finger, it would have. I think that was the moment when my feelings went from "Gee, Australia's a pretty nice country" to "OH GOD WHAT IS THIS PLACE". Which I later combined to form "Australia's a wonderful country--where everything has evolved to kill you."
