Hrm, yes, I guess I did fail to take into account how influential corporations are with the republican party, and they would be against getting anywhere near a default. Though I had at least expected them to hold out until the end of the week, as they have about 10 days to come to an agreement before the true deadline (NPR stated that to be about the 22 of July, due to the time it takes to file the paperwork and get the bills through).

What is this I don't even.  :o
Some of the Republicans may be against raising the debt ceiling, but the U.S. defaulting might sort of.....crash the global economy. Forever.
Is our debt really that much of a structural support to the global economy?

Doubt it. That statement was probably hyperbole. China's economy on the other hand...

Spoiler: It's a... (click to show/hide)

Seriously, this allows the Republicans to allow the responsible action, all the while washing their hands of the action and blaming Obama for raising the debt ceiling without gutting spending to the bone. Hell, I'd expect the AM radio dweebs to even claim that Obama "unconstitutionally grabbed power".

The U.S.'s economy is kind of a big deal. We buy a lot of stuff.

Well, it would certainly kick us in the nads every year for the next half century or so if we did. Interest rates on the bonds sold would likely add tens of billions in federal expenditures per year. Loans would have higher interest, as those are partially based on the bond interest rates from what I've heard. It's similar to having a bad credit rating, but on a national scale. And due to being the largest economy in the world, what's bad for us is likely bad for everyone else at some point in the future.

Hm, note to self, investigate the extent to which the interest rates on my student loans are actually "fixed". There may yet be a silver lining to a financial collapse!

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

The way I see it:

USA Defaults> PRC Collapses Economically> USA Collapses Economically> Global Depression> EU Collapses Economically> Global Economic Collapse> World War III> Global Thermonuclear War> End of Humanity.

Of course, that's just my hypothesis.

Actually, China has half a year's worth of GDP in government reserves. Their industrial complexes would go down the crapper, but they actually would probably be better off than most simply because they could give the entire country a 6 month government paid vacation and still come out debt free.

Edit: although by the looks of it, about 40% of their reserves are in the form of the US bonds; but still, that leaves them with over 25% of their GDP's worth in cash reserves. So I guess it would only be a 3 month paid vacation for everyone in China at their current wages.

So, an internet friend PMd me today and asked why I would scar them for life.
It relates to this website (totally work safe and kinda cute!): http://whoisthecutest.com

Apparently, if you leave the "i" and turn that link into whosthecutest, the website is exactly the same, plus a small 'pi' symbol at the bottom right. Clicking this link leads to a horrid picture of a threesome of three old guys.

After noticing the difference in the link I laughed so hard at them.
but yeah...THE INTERNET: Where one letter means the difference between innocence and pornography!
