Well, I figured out the roots, but fuck, man, that's such a weird word.

Icelanders love their weird words. Whenever there's a vague sign some sort of loan-word is sneaking its way in, the language council goes into emergency mode to create a proper icelandic word instead. There's usually a sense of logic and reason to it though, like the word for electricity - "rafmagn". Elektron is greek for amber, and amber in icelandic is raf. Magn is a word for an amount or strength/power, so rafmagn translates roughly  to "amber-power". Older words can be tricky though. There's a girl's name from old norse still in use in nordic countries, Bergljot, which with a little poetic interpretation translates to "light of safety". But it can also, if you're dabbling in modern icelandic, be read as "ugly as a rock".

Mandarin does that with words for a lot of modern technology.

Phonograph = dianchangji = lit. "electricity-singing-machine"
Telephone = dianhua = "electric-speech"
Modem = tiáo zhì jiě diào qì = "tone-regulate-transfer-harmonize-device" (probably one of the most inelegant examples I can think of)
Computer virus = diànnǎo bìngdú = "electric-brain (computer) sickness-poison (virus)"
Video game = diànnǎo yóuxì = "electric-brain roaming-play" 

I find it kind of amazing at times that China gets as much scientific work done as it does, considering the language is just NOT built for precision. It's wonderfully poetic, but ambiguity is a bitch if you're an engineer.
