Aww butts. If this is how it goes, that's no good.

It's interesting, and kinda scary to play with the water slider over heavily populated coasts. Sure, given a few centuries people have plenty of time to relocate, but we're still talking a sunken Boston, Silicon Valley, etc. And all that fresh glacial water would mess up salinity levels, ocean currents, and cause extinctions in a lot of bodies of coastal water. Might dilute ocean acidification from CO2 absorption a little bit, but that's hardly worth the cost.

I saw a video a while ago about a guy who kept an amazonian giant leech as a pet.... and fed it his own blood. Sweet bus.

I've been playing the Game of Thrones tabletop with friends yesterday in a cafe. All but one of us, for the first time in our lives, so the far more experienced people next table over kept backseat-drivering us at the beginning.

And I swear, one of them was Yoink's long-lost twin or something. Secret illegal human cloning facility under the Biotech faculty confirmed.

Apparently I posted this on Facebook four years ago:

Quote
A neat way to make an adventure setting seem exotic and unique is to take something mundane and normal in our everyday world and tweak it a bit to make it slightly weird. Change the colour of something to some colour that it doesn't normally come in. Change the shape, or the smell, or the size.

Or for real fun, change the number of legs, the length of the teeth, and the amount of aggression towards humans.

I was clearly mad about something. This is how I post when I'm annoyed by a book or movie or something. But I have no idea what the hell I was talking about.

Also, for some reason I was using the wrong spelling of color.

EDIT: Never mind, it's a quote from Darths and Droids.

I still have no idea why I posted it.

EDITEDIT: Darths and Droids is still ongoing!? I could have sworn that I finished it.

Yahtzee's April Fool's "Judging By The Cover" segment on YouTube. At least the last 30 seconds or so, anyway.

Funny though.

So... Two pages ago... Actually really curious to know if Sergarr or XKCD Randall is right.
I mean he had two articles one where he said optics can't make things hotter than their source and then another one earlier where someone was like "what if all sunlight was in one beam" and he said "the world nukes itself it's so hot"
So wouldn't photovoltaics be using principle B instead of principle A?
I have no physics background, am incredibly confused and would like a precis please if anyone's nice enough to provide as long as things don't get more heated than (insert bad joke here)

* Sergarr = really done

No but really, the only way to actually settle this debate is to use a Mythbusters approach for the original "can you light something up with moonlight" (not the "hotter than 6000 K with optics - myth or fact" one, because plasma is hot). It would probably take a while, because moonlight is not very energetic (seen someone calculating that it would take most of the night to gather enough energy from a  reasonably-sized photovoltaic approach, actually).

Well, a single carbon and two oxygens reacting is technically combustion, and moonlight should give enough energy for that pretty easily.
But lighting up something bigger makes it harder.

If I've understood it correctly.

You could also light a material that has a very low autoignition temperature.

Wait, so the photovoltaic argument is basically the same concept as simple machines.. Add more time, get more power?
That's a bit of a cop-out. Unless you can fire that laser in real-time I don't think that's an acceptable argument.
