40 police left downtown (There used to be and need to be a lot more) and they're all guarding the new casino.... Pretty much anywhere else you are in Cleveland is now free reign for crime. Hurray.... Sure, I needed some new cases, but this isn't exactly how I wanted to get them....

Seriously? Our casino's only getting *one* patrol car dedicated to it (last I heard), and we have a lot bigger funding problem than Cleveland does.

O man, that casino is their baby.... They're hoping that thing will somehow revive the rest of downtown, jumpstart the medical mart fiasco (which allegedly will also revive downtown), cure hangnails, and who knows what else. The irony being, of course, that nobody will go downtown or start a business there due to the horrible, parking, crime, and poverty, so somehow they pull what few police are downtown off the regular beat and essentially write off everyplace that isn't the casino off for a while. Thus, the problem gets worse.

Rather than building affordable but tasteful urban housing to lift the current population out of poverty, they're gunning for professionals to move downtown into crazily redone condos. I wouldn't move there on their lives or mine.... Seriously, a few actually good homeless shelters and nearby low income housing would go further to keeping the poverty out of the businessmen's faces so they aren't hit up for spare change on their lunch breaks for a bit than a casino. Plus, you know, it'd help people.

Casinos are a tax on people who don't understand math and probability. Actually it might be very profitable....

Profit's not really enough to help out the local area... th'profit'd gotta' get back into the local economy somehow to cause any kind of benefit. Which... I'm not really sure how casinos do that. Some via employees, but that's not really included in the profit aspect, is it?

Mostly kinda' wondering how the logic works, though. You've got a economic downscale issue and the solution is... apparently to suck funds from the wider populous and concentrate it into an entity that's largely going to be taking money out of the local economic system. Not, y'know, improving education or stimulating industrial or medical fields, improving infrastructure, doing stuff to get money moving around again (ala your low cost housing suggestion; less paid for rent is more moving around). No, no, it's apparently theft by statistics (or profitable entertainment, depending on how you look at it).

The next question is how easy is it to track the kickbacks Cleveland's political/legal structure is getting out of it, and just how large they are to entice people into doing shit so blatantly stupid. I guess some gambling addictions might boost the local psych places up a bit. Which... I guess that's something! Bright side *rainbow*

Somewhere between 50% and 75% of the revenue from the casinos is automatically taken as a special tax that is divided realtively equally among Ohio's 88 counties. One of the biggest reasons that the bill authorizing them was a popular one is that huge amounts of money (on the order of $1,000,000,000 each year) was crossing Ohio's borders into the casinos other states had built along the borders.
