They keep sweat from one's forehead and brow from going into the eyes, and help in making different facial expressions.

And if that doesn't satisfy you, always remember that runaway sexual selection is a hilarious thing. All it takes is a couple* generations of bushy eyebrows correlating with evolutionary fitness, perhaps just because you need lots of nutrition to have bushy eyebrows so having them proves you're great at finding food, before they start getting explicitly selected for because you're just not gonna have any sex if your eyes aren't shrouded in a furry veil. Because you can't see things like "great at finding food" at a glance quite the same way as you can a good ol' pair of forehead sweatmops.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Earlier today, I felt(and smelled) my deodorant being washed off by sweat. Being an antiperspirant, I'm sure it should not do this.

They keep sweat from one's forehead and brow from going into the eyes,

Mine do not do a good job of this.

I'm reasonably convinced that I just whiffed a phone interview because I asked how much the position paid. Didn't even get a figure for my trouble.
Nah man, shows you've got responsibilities.
Most jobs I've applied for are happy to fill you in.

I had a good job interview, and blew it beause when the guy handed my resume back to me (why did he do that?) I put it in my folder (why did I do that?).

He had no way to contact me....

I think either I blew it; or he was never going to hire me and was trying to be nice about it.

The burden of proof lies with you!

Only in a proper debate... as in a debate for a contest.

The whole "The burden of proof lies with the person who makes a claim... ANY CLAIM!!!" is based on nothing.

It is the equivalent of making "No hands" part of everyday life.

---

Yet because I am sure people are going to argue against this...

Should I state that laying a foundation AND challenging it... both require a burden of proof anyway? Neither "Cricket is a team sport" and "Cricket isn't really a team sport" are supported.
Spacebattles forum would disagree with you.

If it makes you feel better (it won't), I did the same thing a few months back. Lesson learned, but damn does it suck.

It shouldn't be, like, your first question, but it's a perfectly valid thing to ask. If they refuse to tell you, it's probably somewhat less than they should.

Nope.

That's one bit of advice I gleaned from someone who's been in HR for the better part of 25 years, up to responsibility for a third of a major retailer's locations in the U.S.: don't do that. Never ask about the pay. They'll usually tell you at some point in the process anyways, and it's not looked upon favorably.

+1

I think most people apply for jobs because they want need money. If they're unwilling to tell you how much they pay, probably better to look elsewhere anyway

Just ran into that long-time high-level HR expert and asked them to refresh me on the specifics:

1. If they're any good at all, they'll tell you about pay (or a negotiable pay range) and benefits either a) during the interview process or b) when they contact you post-interview about hiring you on.

2. Don't mention pay or benefits during the interview unless the interviewer/board brings them up.
2a. If you're applying for a job with benefits (i.e. not a minimum wage-slave position) and would be leaving another job with benefits for it, if they don't bring up pay and benefits during the interview it's acceptable to ask for them to send you information regarding those for the purpose of comparing them to your current situation (as the total benefits balance may, for example, have lower salary but also lower out-of-pocket expenses for things covered by the benefits).

The only time to ask about pay/benefits without prompting is if they've contacted you again and want to hire you but still aren't mentioning it. Any earlier than that and it's a red flag for you to ask rather than suspicious of them not to tell you.

If you ask that implies you actually want money for your work. How can you expect a business to run if it's having to give people money constantly?

Fun fact: In NZ, it's actually illegal for a business to not pay you at least minimum wage, even if you're just volunteering.

"Expenses" "Outgoings" etc.

I don't really understand why it's so audacious to ask how much you're going to be paid. How do you expect people to live without being able to pay bills and shit? :P

I think it's a fair question. Most jobs (not many) I've applied for for mention a pay scale of some description.

To not hire someone who wants to know how much they'll be paid for their time though? Stupid.
