Yeah not a gambler myself, but highly suspect that the fantasy element of what you'd spend the money on if you won is a big part of it. The bit I don't understand is why you have to buy the ticket to run the fantasy no., but clearly it makes a difference to some people.
It does.  You can dream about it, but if its right there in front of you... and you can take a small step to maybe achieve that dream?  Do you just let it pass by without doing anything?
Of course not, you'll throw in for that.  Cause what if?

I reckon gambling is like that...  (Also applying to all those mobile games where you throw in real money to gamble for epic/legendary/overpowered stuffs....)

"You've got to be in it to win it," a lot of people tell me. This is technically true.

I see little appeal in the lottery. My dad had a horrific problem with it. Every day he'd buy several of the $20 instant scratch-offs. And despite what my mother may claim, she enabled it and wasn't much better about it herself.

WTF, my cat just dropped a turd in the litterbox that doesn't smell like cat turd. It smells like human turd.

I hope it hasn't been eating humans again

My sense of smell is really screwy this morning, earlier I was having trouble telling if what I could smell was cat poop or some kinda food smell.
Then it mixed with the smell of hand soap and got even more confused.

I occasionally buy a ticket when I've got the whim to and the expected value is positive (a rare event, but it happens whenever it goes long enough without somebody winning). The latter condition ensures nothing, but it is a good way to keep myself from falling into a habit. I know nothing good will ever come of it, but it is easy to forget that long enough to experience some suspense, and that's worth a coupla bucks if I was gonna spend it on entertainment like video games, food, or drink anyway.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Someone I see occasionally had much darker colored hair on the bottom. This isn't normal.

Isn't that the normal effect you get when you paint your hair with a lighter colour?

I've had this weird pain in my throat for the past two days. It's right around my Adam's apple. I'm not sure if it's a muscle cramp or something, or a thyroid problem. Right now, I'm assuming it's a muscle pain, since it only hurts when I flex the muscles in that area and I have no idea where the thyroid is. PRE-EDIT: According to Wikipedia, the thyroid is below the Adam's apple, while the pain is actually slightly above and to the left.

By "bottom" do you mean the ends, or the roots of the hair?

The only thing worse is bingo, which instead of picking 1 number for a winner picks like 50 or so for every prize to be divided.

It's like a really slow slot machine with the illusion of choice added in.

I dunno, some slots allow you to bet multiple times, to have multiple rows to lose on.

Yes? Twinstick is... basically older than PCs. Jury-rigging it for programs that don't allow for it natively is mostly just a matter of setting up one of the joysticks to use odd inputs (pull to the left = A, or something like that) and then configuring the game's controls appropriately. Nothing really to it, so far as I'm aware.

Naxza is using the fairly archaic meaning of "joystick" as synonymous with "controller", which was common from the '80s or so until the early '00s IIRC (I remember it being used, so probably early '00s)

And yeah, xpadder or steam controller or that PS4 controller program or similar would work out well for that.

... what? A joystick is a joystick. They've... never been particularly synonymous with controllers, or at least they've pretty much always been a particular form of one. Unless it's changed in the last... decade or less. Could be different regional terminology, I guess.

When the zog did they start being anything else, though?
