I buy a lot of 40K novels at the Barnes & Noble near the grocery store where I shop.

I mistakenly bought the 2nd novel of Graham Mcneil's "....Of Mars" trilogy a while back. Only realize it later. Decide to pick up the other two. Manage to get the third book months ago. The first book however hasn't hit the shelves in months and months and months. I finally ask B&N if they can order it for me. There's none in their warehouse.

So I go to Amazon. And you know what I find?

THE FUCKING PAPERBACK STARTS AT 45 GODDAMN DOLLARS. USED.

A $16 paperback at B&N has now tripled in price in a year. And it's not just sellers being dicks. That is the price anywhere now. What. Happened. Is the whole book printed on gold sheaf paper? Inked by hand with inks made from rare Asian beetles? Did Black Library just decide to never print another copy and the value instantly increased 300%? I've been buying 40k books for years. Even hard covers don't run this much. 800 page anthologies don't cost this much. I'm kind of furious. It's not that I can't afford it, but there is something distinctly WRONG about paying out the nose like that. And it's so random. It's not like WH40K novels have taken the public by storm. This isn't even in the flagship Horus Heresy series.

What's worse is I don't think it will get cheaper or that I can find it anywhere else. But I'm already on the hook for the last two books. As a reading nerd, how can I not get the one to complete the trilogy?

I once found a book I wanted on kindle at the price of >$250, I then ordered a newer, paperback edition for $45 so I think Amazon just fucks it's prices up occasionally.

I don't think that's the case here. The book is going for......fuck my life, $100 to $130 new. For a 250 to 300 page paperback. Other titles in the series I can buy right now at B&N are going for about the same price.

On Barnes and Noble's website I see the price for it as $12.64...then as soon as I click on it, the price offered by other available sellers jumps to $45. Some have it new for $171! Something screwy has to be going on here because there's no way that is even remotely sane.

A laugh of truth. Most do run less than that, especially used. Hell, most of the ones I bought were less than 250 new, nevermind used. S'usually fairly specific fields that the pricing goes from merely egregious to outright silly, iirc.

That said, price spikes like that are sometimes the results of automated pricing shenanigans running into coding issues or whathaveyou. There's been 10-15 buck books listed at 4+ digits before, stuff like that.

... also, nenj, you should totally email them and just ask 'em what's up. See if someone can provide the reason the price is so high. I'd be curious just to hear what's causing it...
