... it's actually a bit of a sumbitch to get on welfare in the states, and pretty close to impossible, so far as I'm aware, if you don't have a valid SSN. US is pretty backward in a number of ways, but it also has a pretty good hate-on for the poor. Most of it (and I'm only saying most because I haven't actually been in all the states -- there might be one that isn't a jackass about it) doesn't make welfare easy.

If you really want a group that forces the government to create soc-dem support structures solely for their own benefit, look no further than the elderly. Note how nobody in the U.S. complains about "socialized medicine" when it's Medicare.
