Which seemed to do pretty well, yeah. Hell, that's half the plot of most daytime drama shows, which have plenty of viewers and occasionally critical acclaim.

Though the obvious thing is to take out the badly written part (which, y'know, is the whole shtick we're talking about), in which case you have any number of pretty decent slice of life/drama works.

Well, sure. Except that wasn't the entire premise of Sex and the City.

...the quirky series had multiple continuing storylines that tackled relevant and modern social issues such as sexuality, safe sex, promiscuity and femininity, while exploring the difference between friendships and romantic relationships.

Admittedly, that wasn't the entire premise of My Immortal, either. But if we nuanced it to the measure of the Wikipedia article I just quoted, it still wouldn't be a good plot. "My Immortal revolves around the adventures of Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way, a girl who goes to Hogwarts. The adventures generally contain 'lots of sex interspersed with whining about nothing in particular', mixed with bizarre non-sequiters and cartoonish violence, while claiming to deal with 'srs issus' that are never addressed."

And if you were trying to have something explicitly like that without any meaningful attempt to improve, you could pretty easily end up with something like the more absurdist adult cartoons -- there are a handful of similar conceits that've showed on Adult Swim over the years, ferex. Which plenty of people found well done and pretty enjoyable.

E: Or something like Robot Chicken, Monty Python, etc., if you wanted to step away from animated. It's not exactly impossible to write something like that quote lays out that is still quality.

And even then adding ONTO a premise doesn't mean it is a different premise.

I didn't say that the characters or premises couldn't be in quality works, mind. It's just that they're not very good premises. It's just that they were presented wrong. For example, Plan 9 From Outer Space supposedly had a similar plot to The Day The Earth Stood Still--it's just that the presentation was... subpar. If My Immortal was done ironically as a parody of bad fanfiction--which, mind, a good chunk of its readers think it was--then it could even be called a good work by carrying a bad premise and bad characters to their logical conclusion.

To be fair, certain premises are definitely harder to work with than others. It's pretty substantially more difficult to make an interesting story using shallow, uninteresting characters, et al. It's just not impossible :V

... over 4300 songs in my playlist, and shuffle manages to hit the one I use for one of my alarm clocks (One of borderlands' unnamed combat tracks) three songs into listening for the night. The odds >_<

Best thing, though, is that it promptly hits a different song I used to use as an alarm clock (cthonic's Linear Groove, a tetris remix) immediately after. Shuffle RNG, it's not time to wake up.
