Interest calculation? Like with variable interest? Cuz otherwise that's just powers... or just multiplying, if it changes over time... how do they make that complex?
no, these problems.

Are you setting up equations and solving simultaneously? That's the quickest, easiest way to do it, and basic algebra is surprisingly hard to screw up if you work carefully.

Yeah, those are the sort in which one goes: "how can I remove these nasty words?" before doing anything else.

This requires more working than methods that might be suggested. As a rule, when one replaces numbers with terms in a question, more working is better working. I hate it too when people contaminate good clean maths like this, but OCD is more important than ability for these problems.

Yeah, those are the sort in which one goes: "how can I remove these nasty words?" before doing anything else.

So I would go, before anything else

X+y=43,000  Make this very clear for myself.

Yield = 0.02X+0.06y  Doesn't require a step, but is good to do.

Yield=1520      To make it very clear.

0.02X+0.06y=1520   To make it VERY, Very clear.

X=43,000-y

(0.02)(43,000-y)+0.06y=1520

Then solve. The top bits will catch more people out than the bits I omissed, if they've studied, which you have, as the hour shows.

thanks it was the (43,000-y) that was tripping me up. the instructions had me doing a weird table in order to figure out the equation but that way is much better.

I got Deus Ex on Steam last week and just got around to playing it today. Now it's bugging me about selecting "3D video devices" to use the game's "leading-edge 3D features". They seriously haven't updated this shit since 2000!

It looks like the wayback machine still works, so there's that.

Yeah, I seem to recall problems like that often having some weird way you're supposed to get the equation. As a general rule, screw that, pick an unknown to be x, and represent the other unknown in terms of x. Then it should be easy.

It gets a heck of a lot easier with practice. I first got taught those close on five years ago, and I struggled, and now I can do them not-quite-mentally.

Yes, if the tranquilizer crossbow darts weren't secretly full of some sort of psychosis-inducing stimulant.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I keep seeing Mark Rosewater answering questions about Magic on Tumblr from Bay12ers. It's disconcerting.

I prefer stun batons for nonlethal. Past a certain level though there's no point in going non-lethal since you have enough augs to tank just about any hit, unless you put your points in swimming and upgraded the Spy Drone :P

I feel like installers are part of the charm of playing pre-Steam PC games. Some of them played music from the game and showed promotional materials, like a cool slideshow while you waited. It always got me hyped to play the game. I remember some of the Harry Potter games showed screenshots from versions of the game on other platforms, which was kinda neat.

I also learned how the typical Windows filesystem was arranged, since I always wanted to install games to My Documents (even I don't know why, I was like 7 or something).

The first two weapons we can easily get off the dead terrorists, so ask for the rocket launcher. Interestingly, Paul approves of this.. the idea that we are going to use it on people has obviously not entered into his darkest dream.

The best is when you have an installer for an old game and it asks you to register your product with a company that no longer exists.

Bonus points if it asks for registration via snail mail :V

... triple bonus points if it asks for that and the company actually still exists. I think there's one or two of those still hanging on over the decades >_>
