Maybe I've swayed to the side the right-wing conspiracy nuts, but while I still believe in reasonable gun control, I don't like the "ban all guns" rhetoric that a lot of left-wing people spout because I don't trust the government enough to give them the "monopoly on force" that Libertarians are so afraid of.

Only at some Walmarts. Well, a lot. But not all.

That might look like a lot, but you have to understand that pretty much every community in the country that qualifies as a "town" has one, so it's nowhere near universal. Interestingly, there are no Gunmarts in California - not sure if it's a hard legal thing or just not profitable enough.

Yes? Can't speak for the areas that don't have walmart, but you can get ammo and some firearms at at least some of 'em. There's functionally very little control on firearms, and even less on ammo.

E2: And on an amusing note, it's pretty trivial to take a box of ammo and some incredibly easily obtained (as in, drink bottles and such) material and pump out a good handful of pipe bombs :V

The government already has a "monopoly on force". Under what circumstances could you ever reasonably expect to have to fire on government forces? If you're in that situation and you're not a soldier in a foreign army, you're probably dead already. I don't know what good a gun's going to do you.

That is...Mindblowing, to me. Hell, I've seen like, maybe two guns, in person. One was on a cop on the street, I THINK, and the other is my Grandfather's hunting rifle.

Most cops just have like, taserguns and shit.

Even cops in Australia have guns. Hell, even PSOs (basically security guards who patrol train stations) have them in Victoria, at least last time I looked.

Guns aren't common with our cops either. Mostly because they can't afford them, but there's also not a lot of gun-related violence going around.

Well, handguns have some theoretical application in practical self-defense, even if they're used for crime more often than defense. The only thing I can imagine an assault weapon being used for outside of a firing range or the military is a mass shooting.

Yeah, though, all types of guns need stricter regulation.

I was going to argue that this is because of how common pistol ownership is, but I looked it up and apparently the majority of the guns in America *aren't* handguns.  So yeah, that's interesting.

I wasn't suggesting that somehow more people per year are murdered by assault weapons than handguns, but that a handgun has at least some practical application outside of murder/entertainment/murdertainment. Not very many, but at least some. Guns just shouldn't be in the average home, though. Only if you have somewhere safe to keep it and you live somewhere where you might actually need it.

Seriously though, all you need for self defense is a small-caliber, single-shot...something. You're almost never going to actually be shooting the person you're defending yourself from, so all you need is the one shot just so there is an actual threat to your attacker. Or you could just, like, not get a gun.

If you're concerned about burglars, get a home security system. If you're concerned about muggers, you'd probably be more likely to die reaching for your hip than not anyway.

If you're concerned about muggers, learn some effective unarmed self-defence. A gun is overkill, as the goal is to get away from the mugger, not necessarily kill them. Kicking them in the nards or punching them in the gut, then running as fast as one can is much more effective and less likely to result in tragedy.
