*shrugs* If it's what the community and (more importantly, in these cases) the community's administration want, then it's what they want. There's not really anything bad about that, imo, especially if it's clearly stated somewhere. Blanket, society wide censorship of profanity might be impossible, but limited censorship in areas/discussions where the majority (and/or discussion area's providers) would rather avoid it is perfectly fine. Laudable, even, t'me. Ain't nothing wrong with not wanting to deal with that crap.

Especially regarding the internet, if that's something you don't like... don't interact with the community in question. Plenty of cesspools out there just waiting for a dustup.

Internet communities aren't democracies. You're on the admins server space and you follow the admins rules, or you get out. Plain and simple.

And as far as I'm concerned, communities with kids in them SHOULD actually ban or discourage profanity, not because it's "Bad" or anything, but because it encourages lazy vocabulary building.

I don't disagree, but there should be some level of "Things you can actually say in the event".

At least thing doesn't do triple duty as a noun (fuck), verb (he was fucking), and adjective (he was fucking cool). About the only thing it isn't is an adverb (he walked out fuckingly).

I'll start using fuckingly as an adverb from now on.

... y'know what might be kinda' neat? An automated system that handed out mutes (and eventually a ban) if the poster used the same bit of vulgarity twice in, say, their last hundred posts. That'd encourage some variation, if nothing else.

Ahhh. Well, it sounds vaguely negative ('That's a real fucky hammer you got there' makes more sense if the hammer is broken or useless), so it is an adjective.

Fuck, you fuckers don't even fucking know how fucking useful fuck can be. I used to have a real expansive fucking vocabulary, mostly 'cause I was a withdrawn little fucker who spent most of his fucking childhood sequestered away reading some fucking book, usually a new one every fucking day. That type of habit builds fucking complexity into your writing and speech, fucking right it does. Eventually, however, I had the bright fucking idea of going to work on the fucking rivers on a fucking boat because it was an easy fucking interview for me to land and those fuckers were fucking desperate for any-fucking-body they could acquire, seeing as how half the fuckers they hired were fucking incompetent and the other half fucking walked off after two months of tolerating all the place's fuckery. So I got on with those fucking fuckers and slowly, ever so fucking slowly, my fucking vocabulary begin to shift. The first time I truly noticed it, I couldn't help but fucking think that it was a fucking travesty, that I had ruined myself. I mean, fuck, you fucking speak like this unconsciously, interspersing fucks like fucking punctuation, and some fucker is liable to think that you're a fucking moron. Oh, certainly, "fuck" is fucking evocative and you can say fucking anything with a well-placed fuck or five, but my fucking goodness does it not translate well into other fucking areas of our fucking society, even if you don't become fucking slothful and start spattering your fucking sentences with liberally applied quantities of fuck as if you were some sort of fucking fuck-oriented valley girl.
