The humor is meant to be in the stilted, awkward conversation. It gets bearable over time, and then (for me), funny.

That being said in the TV episode, they pretty much highlight it.

Personally, I think it would be significantly more awesome if the fireworks were launched from drones, helicopter gunships, or AC-130's in a faux dogfight. Good practice for the airmen, too.
