And yet it is called football here in europe. FIFA is Fédération Internationale de Football Association.
Americans have just co-opted the name for their wussy version of rugby.

Yeah, "football" is a terrible name for a game mostly about catching things and running. For said game, I personally prefer gridiron.

Mind you, it's not just the American version of rugby.

Yeah the Aussies in my locale usually don't even use the word "football".
It's Soccer, Rugby and gridiron.
Or more specifically, AFL, NRL, Union, etc.

Fugby is called football/footy where I'm from.
Calling soccer football makes far more sense, though, since it involves a lot more use of feet.

Here in Brazil we call it football too, and I got very confused when I learned that football was a sport with so little kicking when I learned English...

How to have non americans spinning around themselves for hours: Utter the word "soccer".

Seriously though, soccer is a much better word than football for soccer. It continues the proud tradition of sports being named something that is only tangentially (at best) related to the sport itself. We also need to fix the names of base, basket, and volley ball. Then everything can be like golf, tennis, rugby, cricket, etc., and all things will be consistent. American football already fits into the appropriate paradigm by having very little to do with feet connecting to balls, but FIFA-style football is an egregious violation of the norm by actually being vaguely descriptive. It is an abomination that must be brought in line.

Nonono, see, the modern European philosophy is to draw new lines, not utilize old lines, especially when the lines would be parallel anyway, and the offset only two words. And the rest of the world just kinda plays along.

They're all mad I tell you. They should embrace good old American apathy.
