I think people are just throwing the word "punk" onto things for fun at this point.
What?  that would be silly.

How about punkpunk? Renaissance artists discover a new form of bad music, and build an anarchistic society around it?

I think you mean I'm ninjapunk.

Well then how would I label the setting where the noble knights can mow down hundreds of peasants with repeater crossbows powered up by gyroscopes while remaining immune to return-fire due to being in full plate armour, if not "gyropunk"?

I think that would fall within the bounds of ''clockpunk''.
Basically, as I understand it, clockpunk is Steampunk, but based on roughly 1600-ish technology and aesthethics instead of Victorian.
So, no Industrial revolution, no precision machining, instead you have intricate and ornamented handcrafted machinery, typically powered by muscles, wind or water, and whenever large energies are involved, things like springs and gyroscopes are used to store energy.

Isn't nicely fitting into typology pretty much the opposite of "punk"?

Yep. All X-punks are at most basic 'advanced technology in X era, with social mores intact'. Labels are mostly by convention - Steam for Age of Steam, Cyber for Information Age (as imagined in its infancy), Bio for Biotech Age...

Gyroscopes were never The Big Thing in the development of technology the way Bronze, Steam or Computing was, and there is no particular reason to imagine they will in the future, so it's simply Not A Thing in itself, at best falling under a purview of another technological era.

Isn't nicely fitting into typology pretty much the opposite of "punk"?
Snowclones from Cyberpunk, which *was* firmly rooted in punk culture thematically.

A good example of this is Syberia

They are the next big thing in energy storage department. Future railguns will most likely have energy for their shots stored in these things. It's pretty damn significant.

I was playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution the other day, and I think that perhaps the scariest part of the social commentary in it is that the protagonist can kill a bunch of people in the course of helping out an undercover cop, not be reprimanded, and this is presented as a Good Thing. I mean, sure, they were gangsters, but extrajudicial killings at the request of law enforcement leave a bad taste in my mouth >____________>

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

You are entirely free to use that concept. I'm just saying nobody else finds that concept appealing enough to bother.

Ok what does the "Punk" in "whateverPunk" refer to?

Cyberpunk... makes sense... the main characters are usually a bunch of punks.

Exactly, Neonivek. It doesn't usually make so much sense for other 'punks - they're just formed by analogy to cyberpunk, with "punk" simply being carried over while "cyber" changes to something more fitting.
