They aren't likely to revive the Might and Magic series where it left off

If only because the modern gamer finds fantasy and sci-fi to be contradictory.

At least that is the impression I got.

Keep in mind that the Might & Magic franchise was rebooted when Ubisoft acquired it.

If only because the modern gamer finds fantasy and sci-fi to be contradictory.
I doubt it. I think it's just that people in general, be they gamers or writes, seem to have a certain aversion when it comes to mixing the two. There are some rather recent games that do mix the two, like Endless Legend, where one faction are survivors from a spaceship crash and magic in general is actually nanomachines.

Final Fantasy series wouldn't be so fucking popular as it is, if that was true.

Does Endless Legend display it outright? or do you have to manual or menu dive?

It is pretty outright Science Fantasy at this point.

No diving through castles and then "Whoa! modern technology" anymore :P

Rise of Legends had a fun view on magicks vs technology. And the intro is still awesome, even today!

Some it does, some it doesn't. You'd have no idea magic was actually just advanced technology without reading the lore, but the crash survivor faction I mentioned, the Vaulters, have crossbows that look like rifles and can even field robots, for example.

It's pretty easy to dispose of medieval look in M&M series, actually. Just go with World of Xeen aestetic. It's anything but medieval. Note that in-game sprites denote that place with a standard "medieval castle" picture.

In-game sprites in these games lie a lot.

Sergarr :P that aspect in the World of Xeen is essentially the plot twist.

It's not a plot twist if it's the fourth game in the series where each game before had that exact same plot twist :P

ADD: And some games in the series did not even pretend that they were about "medieval" stuff. Like the M&M 6. Or M&M 7.

And if it wasn't the plot twist in both Wizardry and Ultima... to add two more.

Man those old RPGs always had a sci-fi element.

Wizardry didn't have much (if any) sci-fi to it, while Ultima dropped all sci-fi elements after III (and, honestly, they were pretty tacked-on in I and II).

Ultima never dropped its sci-fi elements after the third game...

What with its space fighters, mechanical android race, the going to mars, aliens, heavy weaponry. It was always still there it just took less of a prominent role and became a background detail after the third game...

But then again it was still a twist in the first, second, and third game.

As for Wizardry... >_> I am going to insist that there were, but I guess you are going to ask me to prove it?

The majority of old games were made by people who read books from writers like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Zelazny who did not distinguish between sci-fi and fantasy at all because that divide didn't exist at the time.

EDIT: Wizardry have had a very Japan-esque model where sci-fi part was basically only to allow inter-planetary adventures and guns were generally weaker than swords. It's why Wizardry is so popular in Japan.

Unfortunely, the actualy japanese wizardry games (of which only one got released here) had basically no fantasy elements. Good games though.

I thought that they have had basically no sci-fi elements, though? Isn't the Wizardry Online all about stupid fantasy dungeon delving tropes to the maximum?
