Heh

Funny thing is Penguinofhonor I never made it or intended it as a Bechdel Test.

I made it as a sort of "Ugh I am tired of this!" checklist for anime. Because almost ALL anime has at least one strong female character to the point where it is rare that they just flat out don't.

But what happened while watching is I became invested in these female characters mostly because how they were presented, heck even when presented as the "weakest member" they had a sort of charm to them that made them endearing... Or they just had a style that made them awesome to watch.

Yet almost always three things occur with female characters in anime 90% of the time
1) They would become incompetent or depowered
2) They would be removed from the anime or disabled
3) They would have their plotline thrown out or resolved by a male character

So it has forever become my measuring stick.

It is why Astrid from "How to Train Your Dragon" is the best example of this happening in a Western Animated Feature. As she is a competent female character who is well written, but whose plotline is thrown out for the sake of the male lead.

The Bechdel Test doesn't work to judge individual movies.  It was never intended to.  It highlights an overwhelming gender-based imbalance in movies in general.

Yes, of course a movie can fail the test without being sexist.  Or pass the test while being sexist.  The point is just that male and female roles in movies are systematically very different.  Male characters discuss all sorts of things.  Female characters, on the occasions they manage to speak to each other, usually don't discuss anything but male characters.

But the point of the test is to highlight and question that general trend, not to judge any particular movie.

it's piss easy to pass the Bechdel test.

Yeah. For example just off the top of my head you could write a movie where a group of women do nothing but talk about shoes and say snarky things about other women who aren't present for two hours. Or a movie about promiscuous young lesbians that borders on soft porn. :P

To my calculation almost all really terrible female exploitation movies will pass.

There seems to be a parabolic relationship with passing the Bechdel test and how sexist you are. Which is an incredibly odd co-relation given the intent.

But I consider that to just be the strong exception that everyone already knows about... to the point where even the Wiki references it.

Just noticed there's a quick reply box down at the bottom of the screen and I wonder, does anyone use it? It seems a little barebones to me but I didn't have to do anything different to use it either.

I don't have that box on this forum.

Then again I did change a few settings.

Lots of people do, I think.

...are we going to go through another mass revelation about that now?

I guess this it's that time again where we tell people that [color=transparent] is a thing and that you can use [me] to do emotes.

I use it all the time! In fact, I'm using it right now! I've memorized the most used codes (Url, spoiler etc.) and if you hit quote on a post it pastes it right down here wherever your cursor is at, so I see no reason to actually use the reply screen.

I use the full reply screen's buttons about once a month, but for some reason I don't like the quick reply thing.

Wait, is there a faster way to write links than <a href="address">text<./a>?

Clearly I have much to learn.
