Psychowhatsits make me confuse. It seems to be the science of taking simple stuff humans do and explaining the reasoning behind it in the most complicated manner possible, and also giving said simple interaction a really, really weird name. "Courtship readiness rituals".... what? I mean, seriously, what?

As for my WTF today; I saw an AR-15 with a giant, openable stock today. It stored another gun inside.
Why would I want a giant ass stock that holds another gun inside? If I'm using my AR-15, I'm not gonna want this giant, impractical stock on it, and I'm definitely not going to want to keep a pistol in the stock! Man, Mall Ninjas are weird.

Most of the questions are weirdly worded, with most examples being really unrealistic but I'd imagine that's to make it easier for the person to answer the question. That question in particular was the most wtf-inducing. I just. What. It's like some kind of nature documentary.

The answer was probably "effective use of nonverbal communication" if anyone was wondering.

That's generally because the shit people call simple interactions usually aren't when you actually start thinking about them and trying to break down what the zog is happening.

It's so incredibly removed from reality it's hilarious.

... from what I understand, the behavior described is actually a thing, somewhat clinical/stilted wording of the question itself aside. It's not so much removed from reality as looking at it funny compared to the socially normal viewpoint.

It's like, yeah, you're dealing with something you're not familiar with the terminology or methodology related to it, but these people usually aren't pulling things entirely from their ass. And hey, it being like some kind of nature documentary is kinda' the point, a lot of times. Because a fair amount of psych and whatnot more or less is, just with humans instead of other animals.

Dating or the lead-up to dating would probably be the more colloquial terminology, in this case. It's talking courtship more in the animal sense than the fancier social senses.

... humans are animals, OW. Treating us as what we are is... kinda' a good idea when you're trying to develop predictive theories and whatnot, which if the communications class isn't going to attempt to do, was at least in that case referring to fields that do.

A higher education communications class can deal, at least partially, with more technical writing (such as what you'd encounter when working with psych, or the harder sciences, or business environments, etc.).
