Technology and Magic are only opposites in most modern thinking mostly due to the Renaisance's themes penetrating the popular consciousness.

Previously they were not only not opposites but they weren't contradictory at all. Stories about Wizards often make them more like scientists with advanced knowledge of physics, chemistry, and that magic is simply an additional layer of physics.

Mind you... an App casting a spell itself is odd... given that to my knowledge you are usually the one who needs to invoke the spell.

Besides, it's more of a modern analogue for scrolls than anything else. Though obviously it assumes the wireless transmission of magical energy between unliving devices.

... only if the devices are actually unliving. Shoving magical creatures into cages and whatnot has a long and storied history in the magical arts. So does making horrific abominations unto nature and having little fleshbooks generating magical power for the average consumer. Hell, devote a little of the magic generation to prestidigitation and some kind of sustenance spell and you've got a spellphone that never needs power and cleans itself.

Also, just realized that if I ever get a smartphone and actually have a ring tone, it'll be something saying, "Help... me..."

At least it looks slightly different, unlike all those near-identical fonts with different names.

Well... A spell needs to be invoked by invoking the spell usually by casting it.

In this case the magic is being "used" simply by touching it... More like a charm or trinket then an actual spell.
