Also totes plug it in, see if it works. Don't need a disc for that, I think. And then maybe get some USB adapters for the controllers, if you don't already have a USB controller. PS1 controllers make pretty good computer controllers, iirc.

Holy shit, the thing actually appears to be working. The memory card even had some data on it: some NFL game from 2001 and something called Syphon Filter 2. If any of the data was jumbled or corrupt, I can't tell. It deleted just fine in any case.

I'm not getting any sound in the main menu (could be a problem with the TV, I didn't mess around very much) and I'm not sure if the color's working entirely right (there are odd rainbow effects here and there that I don't 100% think are intentional, though the icons for the save data appeared to be fine so who knows?), but the damn thing turns on and the first controller seems fully functional.

Now what the hell am I gonna do with a 21-year-old console that I don't have any games for and never anticipated owning?

The ps1 has very little sound in the console menu, and the rainbow effects are (probably) deliberate. The console is very much worth owning if you're a gamer, as many extremely good titles were made for it, many of which can be purchased quite cheaply. Alternatively, you can get a bit of mony for selling it, as the supply of working PS1s is starting to dry up (the laser assembly develops problems over time, and I know a few people that have to run theirs on it's side or (in one case upside-down) for it to work right.)

You can usually find used PS1 games for dirt cheap in flea markets and other second-hand sources. They also work in PS2 consoles, by the way, so if you have access to one of those, you might not need a PS1.

One of my favourite PS1 games happened to be one of the few games not made PS2-compatible. That was annoying. >.>

I actually have a PS1 game that only works in the PS2. This may be because soldering was required to run it.

What possible purpose does getting rid of the PS2 serve? Just hook them both up.

I would suggest keeping it if it is an option. Backwards compatibility isn't much of a thing in consoles, of any brand.

Of course, storage is the largest problem. Ending up with cables and boxes shoved into corners of a wardrobe makes cleaning so much harder.

I wouldn't actually totally ditch a ps2. Some games look awful on the ps3s backwards compatibility.

99% of PS3s aren't PS2 backwards compatible in the first place.

The PS2 had some of the best library of its era, which says something considering it competed with the Gamecube. I wouldn't get rid of a well-functioning one, certainly not for a PS3. Franky, I'm not sure how it could even significantly contribute to one anyway.

From what I remember it's the fatter PS3s that are backwards compatible.  They took out the necessary hardware to read the architecture of the PS2 discs when they made the "PS3 Slim!™"

Annoys the hell out of me that they did, wish I could just have a 3 in 1 console and not have to swap out cables every time I wanted to play Dark Cloud 2 or something.  Oh well.
