Why did redtext suddenly get so popular this year.
Because the lower boards have degenerated into a stream of hugboxing monoculture of opinions and personality cults where half of everybody tries to come up with stupid gimmicky "quirky" traits to gain favour with the other half.
I just hang out here cause I like to socialize with y'all. I don't try to be popular, I just wanna be me~

Nah, it's pretty much spot-on. FWIW, I was one of the ones strongly opposed to the ranting about hugboxing the last time it came up, since that was just about people wanting to be condescending dicks without being told off for it.

The constant redtext, one-line roleplaying in random threads, e-peen waving, &c. needs to die in a fire stop. It's obnoxious.

What the hell was it like before AD 2014-11-09?

Or did I show up during the transition?
VN was a bit before my time, but my general recollection is that there was a substantial uptick in post quality in the lower boards after it was nuked, and then a long slow spiral back into the same sort of behavior over the course of years. This is just a general impression, but there was a period of time where most of the high-activity posters were old guard who had stuck around long enough to mature without that being diluted by a heavy stream of new members without much sense for forum etiquette. Or at least that was how it felt to me when I first started posting down here -- it was a major incentive to stick around, and helped lessen my own shitposting tendencies.

Your generation caused this if you want me to be totally honest >_>
Or this, if I was going to be less gentle about it.

You say that like there's point to the lower boards. Beyond creative projects, it's all basically socializing.
Maybe if you spend all of your time in the "Things that made you X today" threads, seeing as how they're basically the catch-basins for all the random crap that would derail other threads. Still doesn't mean they're IRC, though.  :-X

I was pretty bad when I joined, though I don't think I did all that E-peen waving stuff (mostly because I don't know what it is) I had some messy grammar.
Feel free to berate me for anything though, I always need to know if I've screwed up somehow.

Yelling racial slurs at someone while rubbing your genitals in their face is ostensibly socialising, but I think you can see the difference between that and, say, a conversation.

Your generation of b12ers caused this if you want me to be totally honest >_>
I guess? I was prompted to sign up shortly after 0.34 came out and moved to OG within a few months, and then the lower boards proper shortly afterwards. From gut feeling (which I know isn't really accurate) the social climate was more or less stable even as the emotion threads were becoming larger and it stayed that way until maybe early or the middle of this year.

EDIT: Oh, and if what I said applies to you, you either know that it does or lack the self awareness for it to be worth pointing fingers.

That's pretty dickish of you to say, although I understand your point.

The constant redtext, one-line roleplaying in random threads, e-peen waving, &c. needs to die in a fire stop. It's obnoxious.
I'm going to say this right now that after reminiscing in some links in my sigtext, I found a terribly long redtext one-line "rp-ing" in the... happy (?) thread, I realized how incredibly terrible it is. Last time I even did something of the sort was a (convenience-spoilered, might I add) response to incessant ending of sentences with tildes. (Barring my joke about orchestrating the gunpowder plot yesterday.) Also, the heck's e-peen waving? Is it that thing where everybody rattles off lame statistics like postcount and join date?

I swear though, I've been cutting down on that stuff.

((Although, I will admit that a lot of these "the boards are terrible now" rants sound an awful lot like They Changed It, Now It Sucks. But anyway.))

To be honest, I joined several months before .40 came out and quickly ended up down here, but I don't think the climate has changed much since I arrived.

The IRC-esq reflex posting has definitely been a thing grown stronger in the last year or two, from what I recall. Or at least more irritating on a personal level, so as to notice it more.

I... don't really pay that much attention, though. I just post when I post, read when I read, and hang around mostly because I've been hanging around. And I say that last bit in the best of ways. I think.

Besides, most RL socialisation revolves around people having different quirks
But RL you don't tend to get That Guy so much. You know, the one who tries really hard to create something special and unique about themselves to be noticed or whatever. Or pushes an existing trait to try and define themselves by it. Since tuypo is gone I'm guessing he won't mind being example, always stressing how he's a /b/tard whenever anything tangentially related comes up.
It doesn't come off as endearing. It's obnoxious.

If I had to nail a single point, it'd be treating the forum like IRC. That's definitely it. It's probably worse because we have an IRC channel specifically for that sort of thing. I'm certainly not trying to come off as holier-than-thou about this, because I did my fair share of shitposting, but it's something that should be recognized and actively worked against. I cringe when I go back and read some of my really old posts for much the same reason that this stuff irks me.

@Tawa: Re: the link to the black hole: Less than you'd think. This is probably the first time I really recall a major expression of discontent along these lines, and it's certainly the first time I've felt this strongly about it. I mentioned it offhand before, but the only vaguely similar thing I remember was a couple years back when certain individuals were ranting about hugboxing, but that was (by my recollection) half the offspring of political discussion and half certain individuals being upset when multiple people challenged their arguments.

I was pretty bad when I joined, though I don't think I did all that E-peen waving stuff (mostly because I don't know what it is) I had some messy grammar.

Never worry about spelling/grammar/usage/whatever as long as you're making an honest effort and it's more or less legible.

Unless you're writing a story, don't bother to spellcheck, and litter your text with misplaced heterographs. Then I will find you and kill you.

To be fair, there was a certain degree of in-grouping and character jokes before this wave. It's just that people occasionally making a situationally appropriate reference to MSH and MZ being timeclones or whatever is markedly less annoying than a circle of people jerking each other off over their sets of "quirks".

(I'd suggest making a forum game for that, but yeah.)

Hands and feet? You can manage a decent enough pace while horizontal and facing upwards. It's just kinda' painful and definitely awkward. If it was just feet, that's still possible, but it graduates from kinda' painful to vaguely agonizing.

I would argue that to lay down your back has to be touching the floor, so using hands and feet is still impressive.

Ah. Yes. You know, this reminds me that there's an awful lot of hatred over my "wizard" thing, except you people are taking it to the extreme and acting like 75% the posts a begimmicked person makes are fanboying over their own gimmicks.
